The newly designed textbook cover, created by Kiwook Kim and his team, stands out for its novel-like aesthetic and emotional storytelling. Drawing inspiration from the theme “You in the Past, Me in the Present,” the design uses time-slip motifs and evocative illustrations to seamlessly connect historical eras. This approach aims to communicate that history is not a series of isolated events, but a continuous narrative that shapes identity and understanding.
Unlike conventional textbooks, “History Flows As One” is divided into two volumes, each focusing on a different era—one on the past and the other on the present. The covers feature characters from each time period walking toward each other, symbolizing the ongoing dialogue between generations. A dog, depicted as a recurring element, serves as a visual bridge, reinforcing the unity between the two books. When placed together, the covers form a cohesive image, highlighting the interconnectedness of history.
The design incorporates luxurious gilded accents, elevating the tactile and visual appeal of the books. This detail not only enhances the sense of specialness but also encourages students to approach the subject matter with curiosity and respect. The familiar, novel-inspired format is intended to reduce academic pressure and invite students to engage with history as a leisurely, meaningful pursuit rather than a rote memorization task.
Research underpinning the project emphasizes the power of narrative and emotional engagement in education. By presenting history as a living story, the textbook fosters deeper understanding and helps students apply historical lessons to contemporary life. According to the design team, this approach is expected to revolutionize history education in Korea, making it more accessible, relatable, and impactful for young learners.
“History Flows As One” has been recognized with the Silver A' Education, Teaching Aid and Training Content Design Award for 2025, a testament to its creative excellence and technical innovation. The project, developed from January to August 2024, will be introduced in high schools starting in the first semester of 2025, setting a new standard for educational design and inspiring a renewed appreciation for the study of history.
This innovative textbook design demonstrates how thoughtful visual storytelling and user-centered design can transform educational materials, making learning both enjoyable and meaningful for the next generation.
