Fractal Flower Eye: Brainwaves Shape Immersive AI Art

Yiqi Zhao’s interface transforms neural signals into mesmerizing fractal visuals.

Fractal Flower Eye by Yiqi Zhao redefines interactive art, merging neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and design to visualize the unseen depths of human consciousness through real-time brainwave-driven fractals.

Fractal Flower Eye stands at the cutting edge of human-computer interaction, offering a unique interface where brain activity becomes the brushstroke for digital art. Developed by Yiqi Zhao, this project leverages electroencephalography (EEG) sensors to capture neural signals, which are then translated into dynamic 3D fractal visuals using advanced machine learning and mathematical algorithms. The result is an immersive, four-sided projection that responds in real time to the user’s emotions and cognitive states, creating a deeply personal and interactive experience.

The inspiration for Fractal Flower Eye lies in the dream of unlocking human-AI co-creation. By blending manually crafted narratives with brain-controlled AI, the interface allows users to infuse emotion and movement into intricate spatial patterns. This approach not only makes the intangible aspects of consciousness visible but also transforms individual memories and feelings into tangible digital media. The design’s narrative centers on a girl shrouded in time and space, symbolizing dedication to human augmentation and the harmonious potential of AI and human creativity.

Technically, the system employs pre-trained EEG data to detect emotional states such as happiness, sadness, focus, and distraction. These signals trigger a quintic formula, modifying complex fractal iterations to achieve cubic symmetry and maintain consistent 2D cross-sections within a 3D structure. The integration of a diffusion model enables seamless interpolation between states, allowing users to explore their brain-generated art in both two and three dimensions. Each session produces unique patterns, reflecting the singularity of every participant’s consciousness.

Interaction with Fractal Flower Eye is intuitive and deeply engaging. Users control the evolving visuals simply by focusing or shifting their emotional state, with the system projecting their unique “brain flower” in real time. The modular design supports immersive, room-scale installations, and participants can even print their personalized fractal patterns to take home. This blend of neuroscience and digital art demonstrates the potential for AI to augment, rather than replace, human innovation, fostering a symbiotic relationship between technology and creativity.

Underlying the project is rigorous research in human-computer interaction and neuroaesthetics. The development process included co-creation workshops, usability testing, and the invention of a novel BCI-based interface responsive to user emotions. Challenges such as isolating EEG signals from facial muscle activity were overcome by implementing multi-layered data collection, ensuring accurate and meaningful visualizations. The resulting framework has implications not only for art and design but also for fields like psychiatry, where immersive visual feedback can aid emotion regulation.

Fractal Flower Eye has been exhibited internationally, including in London, Hong Kong, and Paris, and was honored with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025 for its innovative integration of art, technology, and wellness. Yiqi Zhao’s creation stands as a testament to the transformative power of merging human consciousness with generative AI, offering a glimpse into the future of interactive digital experiences.

Fractal Flower Eye invites audiences to explore the intersection of mind and machine, encouraging a new era of co-creative expression where every thought can become a work of art.
