Journey Southward: A Harmonious Coastal Residence

Blending Chinese Philosophy with Modern Living in Shenzhen

Located in the heart of Shekou, Nanshan, Shenzhen, Journey Southward stands as a testament to the fusion of tradition and modernity. The design draws from Zhuangzi’s “A Happy Excursion,” weaving together elements of poetry, philosophy, and theology to foster a harmonious relationship between architecture and the ocean. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the residence but also cultivates a serene environment that resonates with the cultural heritage of southern China.

In response to the demands of fast-paced urban life, the designers sought to create more than a functional space. Journey Southward offers a sanctuary where cultural belonging and spiritual tranquility are paramount. The use of natural materials and a harmonious color palette reflects local traditions, while the integration of artistic elements establishes a unique atmosphere that aligns with contemporary aspirations for a lifestyle in balance with nature.

The realization of this vision involved meticulous craftsmanship and innovative material choices. Traditional Chinese landscape paintings are seamlessly integrated with refined materials such as pressure-treated art glass, translucent stone, shadow wood veneer, and stainless steel. These elements, combined with precise detailing, evoke the ethereal beauty of natural landscapes and enhance residents’ emotional connection to their surroundings.

Spanning approximately 423 square meters, the residence features Roman ivory white travertine walls in the living and dining areas, adding depth and warmth while maintaining a bright, elegant ambiance. The kitchen’s slate gray walls, expertly cut to create smooth, wavy surfaces, introduce a dynamic interplay of light and texture. An artistic screen cabinet, intricately carved to suggest misty mountains and water, further enriches the space with layers of visual interest and artistic meaning.

Journey Southward’s design process overcame significant creative and technical challenges, particularly in the crafting of the screen cabinet and the integration of curved, latex-painted columns. These elements contribute to a profound artistic concept, transforming everyday living into an immersive, meaningful experience. The project’s commitment to quality and innovation was recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, underscoring its contribution to improving quality of life through artful, resourceful design.
