Topkapi Sideboard: A Fusion of Heritage and Modern Craft

Geometric artistry and advanced technology redefine contemporary furniture design.

Inspired by the majestic patterns of Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque, Yilmaz Dogan’s Topkapi sideboard bridges centuries of Turkish-Islamic art with modern innovation, offering a unique blend of tradition and sophistication for today’s interiors.

The Topkapi sideboard stands as a testament to the enduring influence of geometric ornamentation in design, drawing from the rich visual language of Islamic civilizations. The piece is named after Istanbul’s Topkapi Palace, renowned for its intricate wall patterns, and takes further inspiration from the six-minaret Blue Mosque, reflected in the sideboard’s six blue front legs tipped with brass. This historical context infuses the design with a sense of narrative, connecting users to a broader cultural legacy.

Yilmaz Dogan’s approach combines traditional woodworking with contemporary technology, resulting in a sideboard that is both visually striking and technically advanced. The motifs on the doors, influenced by Anatolian architecture and Turkish-Islamic art, are meticulously crafted using a blend of CNC machining and hand-finishing. This process creates a tactile, three-dimensional surface that invites touch and interaction, while the lacquer and natural wood surfaces add depth and vibrancy to the piece.

Functionality is central to the Topkapi sideboard’s appeal. The four-door storage system is designed for versatility, with an interior shelf system accommodating items of various heights and a central drawer for valuables. The soft-opening door mechanism ensures smooth, effortless access, enhancing the user experience. The interior’s red lacquer finish and the patina-brushed copper top panel contribute to an atmosphere of luxury and mystique, echoing the opulence of Ottoman palaces.

Technical excellence is evident in the sideboard’s construction. Precision CNC cutting enables the faithful reproduction of complex geometric patterns, such as the “Mukarnas” and “Zencerek” motifs from Ottoman and Seljuk architecture, while skilled artisans add the final touches by hand. The tapered legs, adorned with brass details, reference the elegance of palace furniture, seamlessly merging historical influences with a modern silhouette.

The development of Topkapi began in June 2022 within the gardens of Topkapi Palace and concluded in Ankara in February 2023. The project’s research phase delved deeply into the traditions of Islamic woodworking and ornamentation, overcoming the challenge of integrating artisanal techniques with advanced manufacturing. The result is a sideboard that not only serves as a functional centerpiece but also as a cultural artifact, celebrated with a Silver A’ Design Award for its innovation and artistry.

Topkapi exemplifies how furniture can transcend utility, becoming a vessel for history, craftsmanship, and contemporary design. By harmonizing age-old motifs with cutting-edge production, Yilmaz Dogan’s creation invites admiration and reflection, offering a distinctive statement piece for discerning interiors.
