Flow Sideboard: Streamline Elegance Meets Modern Functionality

Yilmaz Dogan’s Flow reimagines 1930s aerodynamic design for contemporary interiors

Inspired by the Streamline movement, Flow by Yilmaz Dogan fuses retro-futuristic aesthetics with advanced craftsmanship, offering a unique sideboard for modern living spaces.

Flow, a sideboard designed by Yilmaz Dogan, draws its inspiration from the iconic Streamline movement of the 1930s. This design era, known for its emphasis on speed, efficiency, and aerodynamic forms, left a lasting mark on everything from automobiles to architecture. Flow captures the essence of this movement, translating its fluid lines and sleek forms into a contemporary piece that balances both form and function.

The sideboard distinguishes itself through its harmonious blend of materials and innovative features. Flow’s body is crafted from CNC-shaped wooden modules, complemented by custom metal components. The matte lacquer finish, paired with copper-toned metallic accents on the front surfaces, creates a sophisticated visual contrast. Unconventional, angled legs and specialized opening systems for drawers and cabinets further enhance the piece’s retro-futuristic appeal, while also ensuring practicality for everyday use.

Functionality is at the heart of Flow’s design. The sideboard incorporates custom rail mechanisms that allow drawers and cabinet doors to open smoothly with a gentle touch. Storage compartments of varying depths and sizes provide ample and flexible storage solutions, making Flow as practical as it is visually striking. The integration of wood and metal not only supports the dynamic aesthetic but also ensures structural integrity and durability.

Flow’s design journey began with extensive research into the aerodynamic forms and material palettes of the Streamline era. Yilmaz Dogan sought to bridge classic aesthetics with contemporary materials, resulting in a piece that feels both timeless and forward-looking. The biggest challenge lay in maintaining the fluid visual rhythm while integrating innovative opening systems and preserving the natural contrast between wood and metal.

Measuring 225 cm in width, 70 cm in height, and 50 cm in depth, Flow offers generous storage without compromising on style. The piece was designed and realized in Ankara in 2024, reflecting Dogan’s admiration for American cars of the 1930s and his commitment to synthesizing form and functionality. The result is a sideboard that stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of streamlined design, reimagined for today’s interiors.

Flow’s excellence has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, an accolade that honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations. This recognition underscores the sideboard’s ability to integrate industry best practices and technical competence, contributing to a more elegant and functional living environment.

Flow by Yilmaz Dogan exemplifies how historical inspiration and modern innovation can come together to create a piece that is both beautiful and practical, offering a fresh perspective on the enduring legacy of streamlined design.
