PaveLink: Revolutionizing Road Construction with Smart Automation

AI-driven modular machinery transforms infrastructure development and disaster relief.

PaveLink, designed by Yan Zhang and Jialu Hou, introduces a new era in road construction by integrating AI, IoT, and modular automation to address global infrastructure challenges.

Road construction remains a critical factor in regional development, yet many areas face persistent obstacles due to complex terrains, disaster impacts, and limited resources. PaveLink, an intelligent road builder, was conceived to tackle these issues by leveraging emerging technologies. Drawing inspiration from the disparities in infrastructure development, the design aims to make road building smarter, faster, and more resilient, particularly in underdeveloped and disaster-affected regions.

PaveLink distinguishes itself through its modular architecture, which allows each component to detach and operate autonomously as excavators, loaders, bulldozers, or compactors. The truck head acts as a central command hub, processing real-time aerial drone data to optimize construction strategies. This innovative approach not only enhances efficiency but also significantly improves safety by minimizing human exposure to hazardous environments. The system’s AI-driven coordination ensures seamless workflow and adaptability to diverse project requirements.

The realization of PaveLink is rooted in a human-centered design philosophy, focusing on reducing labor dependency and promoting inclusivity in infrastructure development. The integration of IoT, autonomous driving, and AI-assisted automation enables the machine to operate collaboratively, powered entirely by electricity. Drone inspections and backend data analysis further enhance the system’s ability to adapt to complex terrains, setting a new benchmark for smart construction technology.

Technically, PaveLink measures 17,000mm in length, 4,210mm in width, and 3,890mm in height, embodying a robust yet flexible solution for modern construction needs. Upon arrival at a site, the modules detach and function independently, receiving continuous power and instructions via cables. Aerial drones provide precise terrain mapping and safety monitoring, ensuring optimal performance even in challenging environments. This modular and unmanned approach not only accelerates project timelines but also reduces infrastructure disparities by making advanced road-building capabilities accessible to more communities.

The project, launched and completed in Shandong in 2024, exemplifies successful collaboration between academia and industry. Universities contributed innovative design concepts, while companies offered technical expertise and practical feedback, resulting in a system that is both visionary and feasible. PaveLink’s recognition at the 14th National Art Exhibition of China and its Iron A' Futuristic Design Award in 2025 underscore its impact on the future of construction technology.

PaveLink stands as a testament to the power of innovation in addressing real-world challenges. By combining automation, modular adaptability, and intelligent coordination, it paves the way for safer, more efficient, and more inclusive infrastructure development worldwide.
