Yin And Yang Ring: Harmony Through Contrasts

Eleonora Federici’s award-winning ring redefines elegance and duality

Inspired by the ancient Chinese philosophy of Yin and Yang, Eleonora Federici’s “Yin And Yang” ring transforms a classic jewelry form into a bold statement of harmony, contrast, and individuality.

The “Yin And Yang” ring draws deeply from the symbolic interplay of opposites, a concept rooted in Chinese cosmology. By referencing the eternal dance between light and dark, strength and vulnerability, the design explores the dualities present in every individual. Federici’s reinterpretation of these forces results in a piece that is both visually striking and philosophically resonant, making it more than just an accessory—it becomes a wearable reflection of balance.

What sets this ring apart is its innovative take on the traditional bypass form. Federici introduces distinct curves, varying heights, and asymmetric movement, breaking away from conventional symmetry. The use of two pearls—an Australian white pearl and a rare gray Akoya pearl—alongside high-quality colorless and gray diamonds, further emphasizes the theme of duality. The half white, half black rhodium plating on the 18K white gold shank enhances the visual contrast, ensuring the ring stands out as a unique and timeless statement piece.

The creation process combines advanced digital modeling with traditional craftsmanship. Using Rhinoceros 3D software, the design was meticulously planned before being cast, set, and hand-finished. Special attention was given to the pearls, particularly the white pearl, which is secured with an invisible screw to protect it during the rhodium plating process. This delicate engineering ensures both durability and flawless aesthetics, reflecting the designer’s commitment to technical excellence.

Functionality is central to the ring’s appeal. Its asymmetric curves and dynamic form create a continuous play of light and shadow, evolving with every movement of the wearer. The carefully balanced weight prevents rotation, offering both comfort and a sense of natural harmony. This thoughtful design transforms the ring into an extension of the wearer, embodying elegance, strength, and unity.

Federici’s research delved into the philosophical and technical aspects of Yin and Yang, leading to innovative solutions for securing pearls and achieving contrasting finishes. The project, completed in Pavia between September and December 2023, overcame challenges related to balance, movement, and material integrity. The result is a ring that not only redefines the bypass form but also celebrates the beauty of contrast and the power of harmonious design.

Recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, the “Yin And Yang” ring by Eleonora Federici exemplifies the fusion of artistic vision and technical mastery. It invites wearers to embrace their own dualities, making a timeless statement that resonates far beyond the world of jewelry.
