Infinite Realities: AI-Driven Short Films Explore Alternate Worlds

Hasmik Mkhchyan’s anthology reimagines existence through digital art and AI animation.

Infinite Realities, a short film series by Hasmik Mkhchyan, delves into the mysteries of parallel universes, blending literary inspiration with cutting-edge artificial intelligence to create immersive visual narratives.

Infinite Realities stands as a testament to the enduring fascination with alternate realities, drawing from the philosophical and literary explorations of Jorge Luis Borges and Philip K. Dick. The project’s foundation lies in the concept of branching timelines, first illuminated by Borges in 1941 and later expanded upon by Dick’s provocative musings on simulated worlds. By channeling these visionary ideas, the anthology invites audiences to reconsider the boundaries of perception and the nature of existence itself.

The series comprises two short films—Electric Dreams and The Garden of Forking Paths—each offering a unique perspective on the multiverse. These works are not mere adaptations but reinterpretations, using AI-generated animation to translate abstract literary concepts into vivid, cinematic experiences. The films encourage viewers to engage both intellectually and emotionally, transforming passive observation into active contemplation.

Central to the realization of Infinite Realities is the integration of Stable Diffusion AI, a technology that enables the creation of complex, dynamic visuals beyond the reach of traditional filmmaking. Hasmik Mkhchyan’s approach involved extensive experimentation, refining prompts and manually adjusting outputs to ensure that the AI’s generative capabilities aligned with the intended artistic vision. This delicate balance between creative control and algorithmic unpredictability resulted in a seamless fusion of human imagination and machine precision.

The technical specifications of the project reflect its concise yet impactful nature, with the first film running for 2 minutes and 14 seconds and the second for 1 minute and 33 seconds. Despite their brevity, both films achieve a depth of narrative and visual sophistication that has garnered critical acclaim, including the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2025 for excellence in generative and AI-assisted design.

Infinite Realities exemplifies how digital art and artificial intelligence can redefine storytelling, offering audiences a glimpse into worlds where reality is fluid and perception is ever-shifting. The project’s success underscores the transformative potential of AI in the arts, marking a new chapter in the ongoing dialogue between technology and human creativity.

By merging literature, technology, and visual art, Hasmik Mkhchyan’s Infinite Realities encourages viewers to question the fabric of their own existence, highlighting the limitless possibilities that emerge when imagination and innovation intersect.
