In the heart of Istanbul’s Suadiye district, designer Sema Yazici has crafted a residence that stands as a testament to the power of memory in shaping contemporary living spaces. The project, aptly named "From Past To Future," is a warm, inviting home where every object tells a story. From a safe preserved from academic years in America to a buffet imported from Singapore and a pomegranate painting symbolizing abundance, each detail is thoughtfully curated to evoke personal history while embracing modern design principles.
The apartment’s transformation began with the homeowners’ desire to integrate meaningful furniture and accessories from their previous, larger home in Emirgan. Yazici responded by employing a palette of new structural materials, carefully selecting colors and fabrics to harmonize with treasured pieces. The result is an eclectic yet cohesive environment, where antique and contemporary elements coexist seamlessly. This approach not only preserves the emotional value of the objects but also elevates the overall aesthetic, creating a space that is both elegant and functional.
Material selection played a crucial role in achieving the desired ambiance. Timeless marble was chosen for corridors and wet areas, while warm wooden parquet defines the rooms and kitchen. Furniture combines natural wood veneer with lacquered finishes, ensuring smooth transitions and visual continuity. Wallpaper introduces dynamism, and crystal chandeliers paired with paneled wall details add a touch of classical sophistication. Porcelain countertops in the kitchen and bathrooms offer hygiene and modernity, while soft, colorful fabrics and patterned cushions infuse comfort and vibrancy.
Spatial planning was meticulously executed to maximize functionality within the apartment’s 155 square meters. Originally a four-room unit, the layout was reimagined to include a vestiary and laundry space, alongside an enclosed balcony overlooking landscaped gardens. The interplay of black and white marble in entrance and corridor flooring, along with black oval tags for door transitions, creates visual unity and movement. In the living room, marquetry parquet, a marble fireplace, and wainscoting are complemented by dynamic red accents and an antique piano, bridging eras in a single space.
The residence is a living gallery of global and familial heritage. A 1923 German piano, a 1914 Russian samovar, and a 1948 Diyarbakır chest are among the many artifacts that anchor the design in personal and cultural history. Accessories from travels to China, Indonesia, and America, alongside artworks by Turkish and international artists, further enrich the narrative. This thoughtful curation, combined with modern interventions, exemplifies the project’s guiding principle: to create a harmonious, functional, and aesthetically pleasing home that honors both past and present.
Recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, "From Past To Future" by Sema Yazici demonstrates how residential design can transcend mere aesthetics to become a vessel for memory and meaning. The project stands as an inspiring example for those seeking to infuse their living spaces with both innovation and soul.
