Set in the mineral-rich countryside of Bergen, Norway, the Arctic Aurora Spa Retreat stands as a testament to the harmony between architecture and the natural world. The project’s circular form, inspired by the flowing movement of the aurora borealis, allows water to circulate freely throughout the bathhouse, guiding guests through a spatial journey that transitions from communal gathering spaces to intimate, private retreats. This fluidity not only shapes the building’s unique silhouette but also enhances the overall wellness experience by mirroring the calming rhythms of nature.
Central to the design is a commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. The structure utilizes cross-laminated timber sourced from local forests, emphasizing both ecological responsibility and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. Exterior walls finished in white-dyed clay and high-performance vacuum insulation ensure optimal thermal efficiency, while triple-glazed insulated glass units provide superior acoustic and energy performance. The integration of a geothermal pump for heating further underscores the project’s dedication to minimizing environmental impact.
Architectural innovation extends to the spa’s spatial organization. The building is anchored by a central atrium, with circulation paths and thermal baths arranged along its perimeter. This design blurs the boundaries between interior and exterior, offering guests continuous visual access to the dramatic Norwegian landscape. The interplay between enclosed spaces and open vistas creates a sensorial experience that heightens relaxation and fosters a profound connection to nature.
Research into circulation and the balance between public and private realms informed the spatial programming of the retreat. Lounge areas and communal zones act as intermediaries, guiding guests from shared experiences to more secluded, personal moments. This gradient of privacy is carefully choreographed to enhance both social interaction and individual reflection, embodying the spa’s ethos of holistic wellness.
The Arctic Aurora Spa Retreat has overcome significant technical challenges, particularly in achieving energy efficiency and thermal comfort in harsh arctic conditions. The use of innovative materials such as triple-glazed glass and vacuum-insulated panels ensures the building remains both environmentally responsible and invitingly warm, regardless of the season. This dedication to technical excellence and artistic vision was recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating the project’s outstanding expertise and creative achievement.
