Supa Fama: A Mediterranean Garden Restaurant in Shenzhen

Blending farm-to-table dining with lush, immersive design

Supa Fama, designed by Shelley Mock, reimagines the restaurant and bar experience in Shenzhen by fusing Mediterranean influences with a garden-centric aesthetic, creating a vibrant space that champions healthy living and sustainable design.

Located in Shenzhen, Supa Fama stands out for its unique approach to restaurant design, drawing inspiration from the city’s coastal climate and historical European ties. Shelley Mock’s vision brings a Mediterranean twist to the established brand identity, integrating local character while maintaining a focus on verdant, immersive environments. The result is a restaurant that feels both familiar and refreshingly new, offering guests a sensory journey through lush greenery and thoughtfully curated spaces.

The restaurant’s mission centers on promoting a healthy lifestyle through nutritious, farm-fresh meals. Supa Fama’s commitment to locally sourced produce is reflected not only in its menu but also in its visual storytelling. The interior weaves together imagery of traditional and modern farming, inviting guests to engage with the surrounding flora and sparking meaningful conversations about the origins of their food. This narrative-driven approach sets Supa Fama apart from conventional Western restaurants in China.

Materiality plays a pivotal role in the design, with brick, rough plaster, and zellige tiles evoking the warmth and craftsmanship of Mediterranean architecture. Hand-drawn blue and white art adds a touch of nostalgia, reminiscent of family gatherings and cherished memories. The open kitchen enhances transparency, allowing diners to witness the preparation of their meals and enjoy the enticing aromas that fill the air. The ambiance is intentionally bright and breezy, fostering a welcoming and serene atmosphere.

Supa Fama’s spatial layout maximizes both interior and exterior experiences. Spanning 450 square meters, the restaurant features tiered timber flooring, cozy plant-filled dining nooks, and a reclaimed timber bench that blurs the boundary between indoors and outdoors. The design integrates seamlessly with the mall’s open-air atrium, creating a dynamic interplay between public and private spaces. This openness encourages interaction, transforming the dining experience into a theatrical event where every guest becomes both audience and participant.

Extensive research underpins the selection of flora, ensuring that plant species thrive in low-light conditions while maintaining hygiene standards. This thoughtful integration of greenery not only softens the hard architectural surfaces but also highlights the beauty of natural impermanence. Supa Fama’s dedication to sustainability is further demonstrated through the use of reclaimed materials and environmentally conscious design practices, reinforcing its advocacy for a healthy planet.

Recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, Supa Fama exemplifies excellence in interior space and retail design. Shelley Mock’s innovative approach delivers a harmonious blend of artistry, functionality, and environmental stewardship, setting a new standard for lifestyle-driven dining experiences in China.
