Lumenica: Nature-Inspired Glass Lighting Collection

Vergunovs and Maria Kolesnikova blend organic forms with glass innovation

Lumenica, a lighting collection by Vergunovs and Maria Kolesnikova, draws inspiration from the flowing, organic forms found in nature, translating them into dynamic glass luminaires that illuminate spaces with artistry and innovation.

The Lumenica collection stands out for its unique interpretation of natural bionic forms—flowers, mushrooms, and jellyfish—through the medium of glass. Each piece in the collection features a combination of frosted, transparent, and colored glass, with twisted reliefs that evoke a sense of movement and vitality. This approach not only highlights the beauty of organic shapes but also explores the interplay between light and material, creating a captivating visual effect in any interior.

Hand-blown and meticulously molded, the luminaires utilize advanced glass processing techniques, particularly the twisting of relief glass. This method results in dynamic optical effects, enhancing the perception of depth and fluidity. The color palette, carefully chosen to reinforce biomorphic associations, further emphasizes the collection’s connection to nature. Each luminaire is a testament to the harmony between craft tradition and innovative design, ensuring that every piece is both unique and of the highest quality.

The design process for Lumenica was rooted in extensive research on bionic forms and their adaptation in lighting design. The development involved sketching, 3D modeling, and hands-on experimentation with glass shaping and texturing. Feedback from faculty, mentors, and students played a crucial role in refining the concept, resulting in a collection that not only embodies the aesthetics of nature but also enhances the experience of light within a space. The project demonstrates how natural inspiration can lead to functional and harmonious lighting solutions for modern interiors.

Technical challenges were a significant part of the journey, particularly in mastering the twisting and texturizing of glass to achieve the desired organic effect. The designers navigated limitations in material knowledge and production capabilities, while also considering sustainability and current design trends. Overcoming these obstacles allowed for the creation of luminaires that are both visually striking and environmentally conscious, reflecting contemporary values in design.

Lumenica’s impact has been recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life improvements. The collection’s exploration of light, form, and material results in lighting objects that are not only functional but also sculptural, animating spaces with their dynamic presence and organic beauty.

By fusing biomorphic inspiration with advanced glass techniques, Lumenica offers a fresh perspective on modern lighting design, inviting viewers to experience the poetic dialogue between nature and innovation in everyday environments.
