Daria Slobodianiuk’s “Back to Black” collection stands as a poetic tribute to both personal and cultural heritage. Drawing from the symbolism of the Slavic god Khors and the vastness of the cosmos, the collection explores the duality of light and darkness, femininity and strength. Each piece is meticulously crafted to evoke nostalgia and spirituality, reflecting the designer’s deep connection to Ukrainian mythology and the celestial world.
What sets “Back to Black” apart is its unique fusion of mythology, memory, and artisanal craftsmanship. Intricate hand embroidery, inspired by the shimmering night sky, adorns each garment, symbolizing remembrance and transformation. The use of transparent mesh, layered fabrics, and flowing silhouettes creates a sense of movement and ethereal beauty, while simultaneously honoring ancestral traditions and embracing modern elegance.
The realization of this collection involved innovative use of materials and techniques. Elastic mesh and stretch knit fabrics provide both transparency and adaptability, ensuring comfort and a flattering fit. Hand embroidery, executed with beads and bugle beads, replicates the texture and sparkle of stars, while preserving the elasticity of the garments. Each piece is entirely handmade, reflecting a commitment to precision and artisanal quality.
Practicality is also a hallmark of the collection. The three looks, all in size S, are designed for easy transport and storage, with each outfit carefully packaged in a compact, protective case. This attention to detail ensures that the delicate embroidery and structure remain intact, making the pieces suitable for both wear and display.
The collection’s research phase delved into the integration of personal memory, mythology, and material innovation. Historical research and textile experimentation led to the development of embroidery techniques that maintain both durability and visual impact. The flowing capes and draped silhouettes evoke Khors’ mythical cloak, reinforcing the narrative and emotional resonance of the designs.
“Back to Black” offers a dual experience: it can be worn as a statement of elegance and symbolism or appreciated as an artistic exhibit. The collection’s visual interplay of movement and light, combined with its mythological and personal storytelling, has earned it the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, recognizing its contribution to both fashion and cultural preservation.
Daria Slobodianiuk’s “Back to Black” redefines fashion as a medium for storytelling, blending tradition, innovation, and artistry. The collection not only celebrates Ukrainian heritage but also demonstrates how contemporary design can serve as a bridge between memory, mythology, and modern life.
