Sukiya Serenity stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of Japanese design, drawing direct inspiration from the linear facades of sukiya-style houses. Yui Kitahara’s vision was to move beyond simply utilizing wood’s natural characteristics, instead highlighting how light and shadow can elevate the material’s appeal. The chair’s distinctive molding beneath the seat, composed of carefully spaced square timbers, allows sunlight to filter through, casting dynamic patterns that enhance both the wood’s color and the surrounding space.
Central to the chair’s uniqueness is its under-seat molding, a nod to traditional Japanese architecture. This feature not only serves as a visual accent but also creates a calming ambiance by balancing brightness and serenity. The precise arrangement of wooden elements is meticulously calculated, ensuring that light interacts with the chair in a way that celebrates the natural texture of the material. The result is a piece that offers both functionality and a contemplative atmosphere, embodying the wabi-sabi philosophy of beauty in simplicity and imperfection.
Production of Sukiya Serenity reflects a commitment to sustainability and efficiency. The chair is designed for mass production using economical wood-turning techniques, minimizing waste by employing straight structural elements and precision NC machining. Artisanal craftsmanship is evident in the hand-finished backboard, which features gentle curves that harmonize with the chair’s overall linear composition. This approach not only honors traditional Japanese woodworking but also aligns with contemporary environmental values.
Functionally, the chair is intended to provide a moment of relaxation and escape from daily life. Its design, rooted in centuries-old construction methods, is reinterpreted to suit modern interiors while retaining the DNA of Japanese woodworking. The careful balance of thickness in the legs and the interplay between straight and curved lines in the backrest demonstrate the thoughtful prototyping and attention to detail that define the piece.
Sukiya Serenity’s creation was informed by Japan’s abundant forest resources and the desire to promote sustainable furniture design. The project, which began in October 2023 and concluded in June 2024, has already garnered international recognition, winning a Silver A' Design Award and being exhibited in Hokkaido. The design serves as a reminder of the finite nature of wood resources and the importance of revitalizing the furniture industry through innovation and respect for tradition.
Yui Kitahara’s Sukiya Serenity exemplifies how thoughtful design can bridge past and present, offering both aesthetic pleasure and a sustainable future. The chair’s interplay of light, shadow, and form invites users to experience a sense of tranquility, making it a standout piece in contemporary furniture design.
