Cyber Yoke, designed by Don Ian, introduces a bold evolution in steering wheel design specifically for the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. Departing from the conventional circular form, this steering wheel adopts an oval-rectangle shape, merging the benefits of both circular and half-spoke designs. The result is a product that not only enhances driver control but also improves forward visibility, addressing common ergonomic challenges found in traditional wheels.
The inspiration behind Cyber Yoke draws from both functionality and art. Traditional wheels can lead to hand confusion during maneuvers, while half-spoke designs may leave drivers grasping at air. Cyber Yoke’s unique geometry resolves these issues, providing intuitive hand placement and seamless operation. The use of color gradient fabrics, inspired by Van Gogh’s paintings, introduces a vibrant aesthetic dimension, balancing visual appeal with practical use.
Distinctive features set Cyber Yoke apart in the automotive accessory market. The double-ring structure employs contrasting materials and colors, creating a layered visual effect that underscores a sense of technology and futurism. Personalization is further enhanced through the selection of special material-color gradient fabrics, offering drivers a tailored touch to their vehicle’s interior.
Cyber Yoke’s realization relies on a meticulous five-layer manufacturing process: a one-piece die-cast frame, dual layers of PU foam, a built-in heating patch for comfort, and a surface mat covering. This advanced construction ensures durability, comfort, and a premium tactile experience. The installation process is straightforward, allowing Tesla owners to upgrade seamlessly by transferring original components to the new steering wheel body.
Development of Cyber Yoke presented several challenges, particularly in perfecting the foaming mold and achieving consistent surface flatness with hand-wrapped materials. Extensive research using NX modeling and resin 3D printing informed the design, while iterative adjustments to the color gradient fabric ensured both aesthetic quality and material performance. The project, initiated in Guangzhou in December 2023, culminated in a patented product and mass production by the end of 2024.
Recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, Cyber Yoke exemplifies the fusion of art, science, and technology in automotive design. By enhancing both the functionality and style of Tesla interiors, this innovative steering wheel sets a new standard for driver experience and personalization.
