Golden Key Venue: A Catalyst for Urban Renewal in Shanghai

Innovative architecture transforms an industrial warehouse into a biopharma hub

The Golden Key Venue by MADA s.p.a.m. LLC redefines industrial architecture, blending cutting-edge design with urban revitalization in Shanghai’s Jinqiao Sub-center.

Urban transformation often begins with a bold architectural vision, and the Golden Key Venue stands as a testament to this principle. Designed by MADA s.p.a.m. LLC, the project draws inspiration from the concept of the Urban Catalyst—structures that not only serve a functional purpose but also energize their surroundings. The venue’s design aims to attract talent, foster industry collaboration, and create a vibrant, cohesive city environment by integrating productivity, regeneration, and creativity.

Distinguished by its three low-rise blocks connected to a striking high-rise zone, the Golden Key Venue features two slanted, mirror-finish stainless steel columns supporting a dramatic 26-meter cantilever. This engineering feat creates a surreal, suspended effect that merges strength with elegance. The facade, clad in 28,000 red terracotta tiles, delivers a minimalist academic aesthetic, while courtyards, terraces, and rooftop gardens invite nature into the urban landscape, encouraging creativity and community interaction.

The realization of this design required advanced structural solutions and meticulous attention to materiality. The use of ultra-white glass curtain walls on the upper levels establishes a clear visual distinction, while the expansive green spaces along Chuanqiao Road soften the building’s industrial roots. Covering 36,000 square meters, the venue rises to 40 meters with five above-ground floors, some reaching up to eight, and includes significant underground space to maximize land use efficiency.

Functionally, the Golden Key Venue has become a landmark innovation hub through the collaboration of Shanghai Pharma Holdings and Jinqiao Group. The transformation of the former Huashi Storage Warehouse into a biopharmaceutical ecosystem has attracted companies such as Magsense Health, Huashi Pharmacy, and Huantong Technology. This synergy positions the area as a benchmark for urban renewal and a driver of new productivity in Shanghai.

The project’s success is underscored by its recognition with the Platinum A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2025. This accolade highlights the venue’s contribution to advancing the boundaries of art, science, and technology, while also enhancing the wellbeing of the community. The Golden Key Venue exemplifies how thoughtful design and innovative engineering can breathe new life into urban environments, setting a new standard for industrial architecture and city regeneration.

As cities worldwide seek to balance heritage with innovation, the Golden Key Venue offers a compelling model for adaptive reuse and sustainable urban development, inspiring future projects to harness architecture as a catalyst for positive change.
