Gala: Illuminating Spaces with Rose-Inspired Elegance

Guliz Tavukcuoglu’s porcelain lighting celebrates beauty, versatility, and philosophical depth

Inspired by the symbolic resonance of the rose, the Gala decorative lighting collection by Guliz Tavukcuoglu brings a unique blend of artistry, innovation, and existential philosophy into contemporary interiors.

The Gala lighting collection draws its core inspiration from the rose, a flower long associated with love, balance, and high vibrational energy. Guliz Tavukcuoglu’s vision was to channel the rose’s serene frequency into living spaces, creating an atmosphere that nurtures tranquility and emotional warmth. The design also references Jean-Paul Sartre’s existential philosophy, particularly the concepts of the “other” and the “gaze,” resulting in a form that invites multiple interpretations depending on the viewer’s perspective.

Distinguished by its stylized bud-shaped porcelain body, Gala offers a dynamic visual experience that changes with every angle. The piece’s versatility is a standout feature: it functions as a pendant, wall sconce, or decorative object, adapting seamlessly to various interior contexts. The use of translucent Audrey Blackman porcelain ensures a soft, diffused light, while the concealed LED bulb enhances visual comfort and maintains the purity of the design’s form.

Production of Gala involves a meticulous process, beginning with 3D modeling to capture the organic, upward-tapering silhouette of a rosebud. The porcelain is cast in plaster molds, then undergoes drying, biscuit firing, wet sanding, glazing, and a final firing. Brass connection pipes and a countersunk head insert system provide both durability and aesthetic refinement, while transparent cables maintain the fixture’s clean lines.

Technical specifications highlight Gala’s thoughtful engineering: standing 260 mm tall with a 120 mm diameter, it utilizes a 3000K LED for warm illumination. The fixture’s adaptability allows for use as a table lamp, nightstand accent, or statement pendant, with or without electrical connection. The porcelain’s light-transmitting quality and the upward-glazed interior create a gentle, ambient glow that enhances any setting.

The design journey began in Istanbul in late 2023, with ongoing production and a planned exhibition in June 2025. Gala’s development required overcoming challenges in shaping porcelain’s organic forms and ensuring precise integration of brass fittings. The result is a testament to the enduring value of craftsmanship and the integration of philosophical and artistic research into functional design.

Recipient of the Iron A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2025, Gala stands out for its innovative approach, technical excellence, and the emotional resonance it brings to contemporary interiors. The collection exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform everyday objects into sources of inspiration and well-being.
