The Firefly lamp draws its conceptual roots from the luminous insect that lights up the night, as well as from historic lamps that once defined the atmosphere of interiors before the advent of electricity. This design evokes the intimate, localized glow of old-world lighting, transforming any corner into a meaningful focal point. Mahya Hoseini’s approach bridges the gap between memory and modernity, creating a product that resonates with both nostalgia and innovation.
What sets the Firefly lamp apart is its remarkable adaptability. Designed for use as both a wall and desk lamp, it features a rotating globe that accommodates sloped ceilings and diverse spatial needs. Two distinct light sources—one subtle for ambiance and another brighter for reading—allow users to tailor the lighting experience. This flexibility makes the Firefly lamp particularly suitable for hotel rooms and residential spaces seeking both function and atmosphere.
The construction of the lamp emphasizes craftsmanship and material authenticity. An opaque glass globe diffuses light softly, while a lathe-turned wooden base anchors the design with tactile warmth. A slender rod connects the globe to the base, enabling 360-degree rotation and effortless adjustment. These thoughtful details not only reference the aesthetics of traditional Iranian and Middle Eastern lighting but also introduce a contemporary sensibility through form and function.
Research for the Firefly lamp focused on reviving the emotional and architectural significance of light in Iranian spaces. Rather than replicating ornate historical motifs, Hoseini pursued a minimalist form that subtly nods to heritage while embracing modern design principles. The result is a lamp that enhances quality of life by fostering a unique ambiance and a sense of belonging in its environment.
The project’s main challenge lay in balancing the client’s desire for a fresh design with an old-world feel, especially given the constraints of working primarily with wood. Overcoming these limitations, Hoseini succeeded in delivering a product that is both technically innovative and culturally evocative. The Firefly lamp’s excellence was recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, underscoring its contribution to the evolution of lighting design and its positive impact on contemporary lifestyles.
As lighting continues to shape the way spaces are experienced, the Firefly lamp stands as a testament to the enduring power of thoughtful design—illuminating not just rooms, but the stories and traditions that inspire them.
