Brilliant Olive: Kiriko Glassware Inspired by Nature’s Wisdom

Keiji Ishikawa’s award-winning tableware captures the spirit of olive groves

Brilliant Olive stands out in the world of glass tableware, merging the ancient symbolism of the olive tree with the refined techniques of Japanese Kiriko cut glass. The design’s foundation lies in the olive’s enduring vitality, with each piece meticulously crafted to evoke the serenity and growth found in nature. Olive branches, adorned with alternating pairs of leaves in a spiral pattern, reflect both the passage of time and the promise of renewal. Heart-shaped leaves add a touch of warmth, while gradient-colored olives symbolize humble intelligence. This thoughtful arrangement, reminiscent of puzzle pieces, comes alive as light dances through the glass, creating a shimmering effect that mimics living foliage.

Keiji Ishikawa’s approach to Brilliant Olive is distinguished by its technical innovation and artistic sensitivity. The double-layered glassware is shaped, ground, and polished entirely by hand, utilizing advanced Kiriko techniques. Custom wide-angle V-cut grinding wheels were specially developed to achieve the intricate olive leaf patterns, while wide wheels express the delicate gradients of the olives themselves. The process demands exceptional precision, especially when working with darker glass, ensuring that each motif is rendered with clarity and depth.

The collection includes a range of tableware: sake glasses, wine glasses, rock glasses, and plates, each with carefully considered proportions. The sake glass, for example, measures 60mm in diameter and 70mm in height, while the plate spans 150mm in diameter. Viewed from the side, the V-cut olive leaf pattern creates a mesmerizing, layered effect. When a drink is poured and observed from above, the inner patterns reflect and overlap, producing a complex, lifelike shimmer that enhances the drinking experience.

Brilliant Olive’s development began in Tokushima, Japan, in August 2024 and concluded in January 2025. The project required extensive research and experimentation, including the creation of custom-cutting wheels and the mastery of precise application techniques. These efforts culminated in a design that not only honors the olive’s symbolic heritage but also pushes the boundaries of contemporary glass art.

Recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in 2025, Brilliant Olive exemplifies the fusion of technical excellence and artistic vision. The collection’s shimmering motifs and thoughtful symbolism invite admiration, offering a fresh perspective on the possibilities of glassware in modern living.
