Zifei Ding’s visual identity celebrates LA’s cultural fusion

Chinatown Rebranding by Zifei Ding offers a fresh visual narrative that honors the vibrant cultural legacy of Los Angeles’ Chinatown while embracing its evolving, modern identity.

Chinatown in Los Angeles stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of cultural integration. Zifei Ding’s rebranding project seeks to capture this unique blend, creating a visual system that both respects the neighborhood’s historical roots and highlights its contemporary revitalization. The project’s core aim is to showcase the fusion of Chinese and American cultures, reflecting Chinatown’s role as a bridge between tradition and innovation within the city’s diverse landscape.

Central to the design is a series of posters, each measuring 24 by 36 inches, that weave together motifs from old Chinatown with elements of the new plaza’s architecture and energy. The graphics employ a harmonious palette and iconography, drawing from extensive research into Asian and North American cultural intersections. This approach ensures that the visual identity resonates with both long-standing community members and a new generation of residents and visitors.

One of the project’s distinguishing features is its ability to convey Chinatown’s layered identity. By integrating symbols and narratives from both Chinese heritage and American urban life, the design bridges generational and cultural divides. Zifei Ding’s work not only celebrates the neighborhood’s past but also positions it as a vibrant, forward-looking part of Los Angeles.

The rebranding initiative faced the creative challenge of honoring Chinatown’s historical significance while making space for modernity.
