The Traditional Parure by Ekaterina Korzh stands as a powerful statement on cultural identity and artistic protest. Drawing inspiration from original Russian hand embroidery and metalwork, Korzh challenges modern narratives by referencing authentic historical craft practices. This jewelry set, consisting of a Celebration Tiara, a faux amber neckpiece, and an Ojerelok neckpiece, pays homage to the ceremonial adornments once worn by young women in Northern Russia as they transitioned into adulthood.
What distinguishes this project is its seamless integration of traditional craft-based techniques with modern sustainable technologies. Korzh’s meticulous research into Russian costume history informs each element, ensuring historical accuracy while introducing innovative materials and processes. The Celebration Tiara features a rich combination of cotton cord, mother of pearl, silk, vintage beads, and fine silver, while the faux amber neckpiece utilizes recycled glass and enamel inlay, exemplifying a commitment to eco-conscious design.
The technical realization of the Traditional Parure demanded both patience and ingenuity. Over 400 hours were dedicated to developing and handcrafting each piece, with the project spanning from October 2023 to April 2024 in Lawrence, Kansas. Notably, Korzh pioneered a unique method for applying the cloisonné goldsmithing technique directly onto recycled glass, a process that required extensive research into both glass properties and traditional enameling methods.
Historically, such parures were worn by peasant women in Northern Russia until the early 20th century, particularly during ceremonies marking the passage into adulthood before marriage. By reviving these forms with contemporary methods, Korzh not only preserves cultural memory but also expands the possibilities of sustainable jewelry design. The project’s innovative approach has garnered recognition, earning the Iron A' Costume and Heritage Wear Design Award in 2025 for its blend of practicality, innovation, and emotional resonance.
The Traditional Parure exemplifies how design can serve as both a vessel for heritage and a platform for modern expression. Through the thoughtful fusion of past and present, Ekaterina Korzh invites audiences to reconsider the value of tradition in shaping a more sustainable and meaningful future for wearable art.
