Studio Kaz’s The Chakai exhibition reimagines the traditional tea ceremony room, or chashitsu, by fusing Japanese materials with contemporary assembly and digital innovation. Inspired by the philosophy that the tea ceremony is as much about entertaining guests as it is about serving tea, the design invites visitors to engage with the space itself. The project’s guiding principle was to utilize native materials such as rush grass and Tango Chirimen, but to assemble them in a manner distinct from conventional Japanese architecture.
One of the installation’s most distinctive features is the use of Tango Chirimen, a delicate crepe fabric, as a psychological boundary within the room. This fabric, animated by projection mapping, responds to the slightest air movement. Embedded sensors detect the fabric’s motion, triggering changes in projected imagery and ambient sound, thus making each guest’s presence an integral part of the evolving environment. This interactive element blurs the line between observer and participant, echoing the spirit of “omotenashi”—the Japanese art of hospitality.
The flooring introduces another layer of innovation. Studio Kaz developed “IGUSA-faced plywood” by adhering rush grass, typically discarded for being too long for traditional tatami looms, onto plywood. This sustainable approach not only preserves the tactile and visual qualities of tatami but also highlights the potential of upcycled materials in contemporary design. The result is a floor that honors tradition while championing environmental consciousness.
The Chakai’s technical realization required close collaboration across disciplines, including video production, graphic design, and interior architecture. The integration of sensors and projection mapping demanded precise calibration to ensure seamless interaction between the physical and digital elements. According to Studio Kaz, overcoming challenges such as signal adjustment and the development of new material techniques was essential to achieving the exhibition’s immersive quality.
Presented in Tokyo in October 2024, The Chakai stands as a testament to the enduring relevance of the tea ceremony in modern life. Awarded Silver in the 2025 A' Interactive, Experiential and Immersive Design Installations Award, the project is celebrated for its technical excellence and artistic ingenuity. As Studio Kaz demonstrates, the fusion of tradition and innovation can create spaces that not only honor cultural heritage but also inspire awe and participation in contemporary audiences.
The Chakai invites reflection on how design can foster connection, sustainability, and sensory engagement, offering a blueprint for future experiential installations that bridge the past and the present.
