The Ab: Persian Symbolism in Contemporary Jewelry

Amirali Meysami’s award-winning designs celebrate water’s sacred legacy

Drawing inspiration from ancient Persian spirituality, The Ab collection by Amirali Meysami reimagines the symbolism of water through minimalist, modern jewelry, blending tradition with innovation.

The Ab collection stands as a testament to the enduring influence of Persian heritage in contemporary design. Rooted in Avestan spirituality, water is revered alongside fire as a sacred element in Iranian culture. Meysami’s work draws from this deep well of symbolism, referencing the role of ponds in Persian gardens as emblems of harmony, renewal, and the eternal connection between humanity and the divine. This cultural reverence is translated into wearable art, infusing each piece with layers of meaning that transcend mere aesthetics.

Distinctive craftsmanship sets The Ab apart. The ring and bangle are meticulously designed to evoke the shimmering, reflective qualities of water. The ring’s polished, hollow center captures light, mimicking the mesmerizing play of sunlight on a pond’s surface. The bracelet echoes this effect, offering both depth and luminosity. Contrasting matte finishes on the outer surfaces reinforce the duality of texture and symbolism, highlighting the interplay between the tangible and the ethereal.

Advanced technology underpins the realization of these pieces. Meysami began with hand-drawn sketches, progressing to digital renderings using Matrix software. Resin prototypes were produced via 3D printing, enabling precise mold preparation. The final forms were cast in 925 silver, a process demanding exceptional accuracy due to the substantial volume and intricate details. The finishing phase involved a delicate balance of matte and glossy textures, achieved through careful polishing and texturing, resulting in a flawless, harmonious contrast.

Functionality and comfort are central to the collection’s appeal. Both the ring and bangle are lightweight and designed for everyday wear, seamlessly complementing a variety of styles. The bangle’s adjustable design ensures versatility, catering to different wrist sizes without compromising on elegance or structural integrity. This focus on usability, combined with symbolic depth, positions The Ab as a thoughtful fusion of art and practicality.

Research into the universal and cultural significance of water informed every aspect of the design. Drawing on the writings of Carl Jung and ancient Zoroastrian texts, Meysami explored water’s role as a symbol of purity, renewal, and cosmic order. The project’s genesis in Yazd, a historic center of Zoroastrianism, further grounds the collection in its spiritual and geographical context. Overcoming technical challenges in casting and finishing, Meysami’s dedication to craftsmanship and symbolism has been recognized with a Bronze A’ Design Award, underscoring the collection’s creative and cultural impact.

The Ab collection by Amirali Meysami exemplifies how contemporary jewelry can honor tradition while embracing modernity. Through innovative techniques and profound symbolism, these pieces invite wearers to reflect on the sacredness of water and its timeless role in human culture.
