Work at Nagasaki: Nature-Inspired Co-Working in the City

Blending Nagasaki’s heritage and landscape into a modern workspace

Work at Nagasaki, designed by Mitsuhiro Shoji - Uchida Shanghai, redefines the co-working experience by harmonizing the city’s historical influences and natural beauty with contemporary work culture.

Situated in the heart of Nagasaki’s old city center, Work at Nagasaki stands as a testament to the city’s unique blend of tradition and innovation. Drawing inspiration from extensive fieldwork on Nagasaki’s streets and natural surroundings, the design integrates aged materials and architectural styles influenced by both Western and Chinese cultures. The result is a workspace that feels both rooted in history and forward-looking, offering a creative environment that appears to float within the elegant landscape of Nagasaki.

This next-generation co-working space is distinguished by its use of authentic local materials. Isahaya stone, a staple of Nagasaki’s urban infrastructure, is featured in its raw form for furniture, while a striking 5.5-meter steel plate counter—crafted using shipbuilding technology—anchors the reception area. The design concept evolved through multiple site visits, with elements such as stone patterns and the lines of the Nagasaki mountain range thoughtfully reflected in the interior, ensuring a seamless connection with the surrounding environment.

The building spans two floors, totaling 4,500 square meters, connected by a grand staircase that doubles as an open seminar room during events. The 10th floor houses a reception area, event space, and open office zones, while the 11th floor offers closed offices and a conference room with panoramic views. The use of local materials, including Sendan wood for furniture and interiors, underscores a commitment to authenticity and sustainability, while the spatial layout encourages both focused work and dynamic interaction.

Designed to foster creativity and economic development, Work at Nagasaki welcomes companies, students, and startups from around the world. The flexible workspace accommodates teams of various sizes, offering environments that range from open and rustic to modern luxury. Visitors can select their preferred setting and enjoy a high level of spatial hospitality, with every detail crafted to stimulate the senses and enhance productivity.

The project’s realization involved overcoming significant challenges, particularly in sourcing and working with raw, unprocessed materials. The design team, including architects and local producers, invested considerable effort in ensuring the quality and strength of each element, from the 350 kg raw stone tables to the custom-laminated wood furnishings. This dedication to material integrity and nuanced design contributed to the project’s recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in 2025, highlighting its outstanding expertise and innovation in interior space design.

Work at Nagasaki exemplifies how thoughtful design can bridge the past and future, creating spaces that are both functional and inspiring. By embracing the textures, colors, and stories of its locale, this co-working hub sets a new standard for integrating culture, nature, and modern work life.
