The Ori, designed by Zouii Design, stands as a testament to the transformative power of light and spatial flow in residential architecture. Drawing inspiration from the Hebrew word for "light," the project embodies the fluidity and warmth that natural illumination brings to daily life. The design concept centers on creating an environment where light, shadow, people, and objects interact in a continuous, harmonious dialogue, fostering a living experience that is both dynamic and deeply personal.
Departing from rigid stylistic boundaries, The Ori merges the patina of European vintage furniture with the tranquility of Japanese aesthetics and the simplicity of Scandinavian design. This unique blend results in a space that feels both timeless and contemporary. Key features include a Japanese pendant light at the entrance, expansive floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Yanshuei River, and a curved ceiling that guides light toward communal areas. The reimagined layout, which swaps the positions of the TV and sofa, enhances adaptability and prepares the home for future needs.
Material selection plays a pivotal role in The Ori’s serene ambiance. Walls coated with mineral paint in milky white and gray tones provide a refined yet inviting backdrop. The entrance features serpentine-patterned ceramic tiles that mimic natural stone, setting a tranquil tone upon entry. Wood accents and zebra patterns introduce subtle contrasts, while meticulous detailing ensures a harmonious blend of textures and visual depth throughout the residence.
The 112.3-square-meter home is thoughtfully organized to maximize flexibility and openness. The study’s reduced size allows it to serve as a guest or children’s room, while the dining table’s central placement encourages family interaction. Two independent storage rooms replace traditional cabinetry, maintaining spatial fluidity and supporting the evolving needs of its residents. This approach not only enhances functionality but also preserves the minimalist aesthetic that defines The Ori.
Six months after completion, the homeowner’s ongoing adjustments to the furniture layout underscore the design’s success in fostering adaptability. The flexible storage solutions have been particularly praised for their efficiency and contribution to a clutter-free, light-filled environment. This evolving interaction between space and inhabitant highlights the project’s core philosophy: a home should grow and change alongside those who live within it.
The Ori, completed in January 2024 in Taiwan, exemplifies Zouii Design’s commitment to balancing functionality with poetic expression. Awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, the project stands as a model for integrating historical warmth, modern refinement, and sustainable materials to create a living space that is both beautiful and adaptable. The Ori invites residents to experience the subtle interplay of light and shadow, making each day a new chapter in the narrative of home.
