“Time Flows” by Sheng Xian You - Sheng Design stands as a testament to the philosophy that home design should transcend visual appeal, becoming an integral part of its inhabitants’ lives. Drawing inspiration from the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, the project embraces imperfection and the beauty of transience. Flowing curves, a milky brown palette, and the interplay of natural textures create a cohesive, calming atmosphere, dissolving boundaries between spaces and fostering a closer connection between the environment and its residents.
The residence’s most distinctive feature is its curved ceiling, inspired by planetary orbits. Each curve is meticulously calculated, resulting in a floating illusion that adds dynamic movement to the space. This innovative ceiling, achieved through specialized construction techniques, overcomes traditional limitations and ensures seamless continuity. The integration of shou sugi ban and leather in the TV wall and entryway bench introduces depth and contrast, while natural materials unify functional areas, enhancing the overall sophistication of the living experience.
Material selection and craftsmanship are central to the project’s realization. The living room features dense wood panels paired with heat-pressed leather for a warm, luxurious texture, while shou sugi ban provides a striking focal point. In the bedroom, faux stone-textured leather and indirect lighting evoke tranquility and stability, with soft illumination accentuating the tactile qualities of each surface. The thoughtful layering of materials and light creates a harmonious, inviting environment throughout the home.
Spanning 109 square meters, the original two-bedroom layout was reconfigured to optimize privacy and flow. One room was transformed into a suite, and the guest bathroom became a private en-suite. Integrated cabinetry minimizes visual segmentation, and an open shelving unit at the entryway offers practical storage without disrupting the unified aesthetic. The design’s smooth circulation and functional layout cater to daily needs, while features like the expansive bookshelf and enveloping bedroom design foster comfort and relaxation.
The project’s completion in November 2024 in Taiwan marks a significant achievement in residential design, recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025. Sheng Design’s approach—merging continuous curves, layered materials, and a narrative-driven use of light—redefines the emotional value of home. The space not only reflects the passage of time but also symbolizes hope and the enduring stability that a thoughtfully designed residence can provide.
“Time Flows” exemplifies how innovative design and material mastery can elevate everyday living, offering a blueprint for future residential spaces that prioritize both aesthetic integrity and the well-being of their inhabitants.
