Ryucan: Samurai-Inspired Sustainable Oil Container

Innovative packaging merges strength, eco-efficiency, and ergonomic design

Ryucan, designed by Peyman Hashemi and Kayhan Turan, reimagines industrial liquid containers by drawing inspiration from the layered resilience of Samurai armor, resulting in a product that excels in durability, sustainability, and user experience.

The Ryucan oil container stands out for its unique fusion of traditional inspiration and modern engineering. Drawing from the robust, layered structure of Samurai armor, the design symbolizes strength and protection while introducing a distinctive visual identity to industrial packaging. This approach not only elevates the aesthetic appeal but also addresses the practical demands of durability and efficiency in liquid storage.

Manufactured using advanced blow molding technology, Ryucan utilizes ninety percent recycled high-density polyethylene, significantly reducing the reliance on virgin plastics. The application of finite element analysis during the design phase enabled a twenty percent reduction in weight without compromising structural integrity. This optimization not only lowers transportation emissions but also enhances handling and maneuverability for users.

One of Ryucan’s most notable features is its embossed branding, which replaces traditional adhesive labels. This innovation eliminates the risk of label peeling and microplastic waste, streamlining the recycling process and furthering the container’s eco-friendly credentials. The ergonomic grip and lightweight build ensure comfortable, spill-free pouring, while the reinforced body withstands drops from over two meters and resists high pressure at elevated temperatures.

Ryucan’s design process involved extensive research and rigorous testing in Istanbul throughout 2023, culminating in its debut at ICIS 2025 London. The project overcame significant challenges, including achieving high durability with recycled materials and integrating embossed branding. These efforts resulted in a container that not only meets but exceeds industry standards for sustainability and performance.

Recognized with a Bronze A' Packaging Design Award in 2025, Ryucan exemplifies how thoughtful design can advance both environmental responsibility and user convenience. Its Samurai-inspired form, technical innovation, and commitment to recyclability set a new benchmark for sustainable industrial packaging solutions.

Ryucan’s success highlights the potential for design to drive positive change in everyday products, offering a compelling model for future developments in eco-friendly packaging.
