In the bustling urban landscape of Hong Kong, Nebu stands out as a retail store that reimagines the traditional shopping environment. Designed by Eric Fung, the space draws inspiration from the delicate beauty of a winter morning, using soft whites interwoven with pale blues to evoke the purity and serenity of freshly fallen snow. Wooden display fixtures and gentle lighting introduce a natural warmth, offering a striking contrast to the ethereal ambiance and inviting customers to linger and engage with the brand on a deeper level.
Nebu distinguishes itself through its ephemeral design philosophy, capturing fleeting moments much like the snowflakes that inspire its signature crisps. The store is not merely a point of sale but an artistic sanctuary where sensory and emotional experiences intertwine. This approach transforms the beauty of the moment into an unforgettable retail journey, encouraging brand recognition and customer loyalty through memorable touchpoints and aesthetic immersion.
The realization of Nebu’s unique atmosphere relies on an innovative combination of materials. Eric Fung’s team experimented with sanded acrylic and stainless steel, ultimately achieving a finish that mimics the tactile sensation of snow. The sanded acrylic, slightly transparent, allows the texture of stainless steel to subtly emerge from beneath, creating a visual and tactile experience that is both cold and inviting—an embodiment of the store’s wintry inspiration.
Spanning 26 square meters with a three-meter ceiling height, Nebu’s open layout encourages free navigation and exploration. A highlight of the store is the chocolate fountain production area, where customers can observe the creation of chocolate-coated snowflake crisps up close. This interactive feature transforms the shopping experience into a pilgrimage of aesthetics, enhancing engagement and inviting customers to savor each moment. Snowflake crisps are displayed like art pieces, appealing to both sight and taste, and fostering a sense of discovery.
Underlying Nebu’s design is a foundation of research into customer behavior and shopping psychology. By studying product characteristics and optimizing spatial layout, Eric Fung ensures that the store not only delights the senses but also facilitates an efficient and seamless retail experience. Overcoming technical challenges, such as transporting a seven-meter ribbon plastic board for the logo canopy in a single piece, further demonstrates the ingenuity and dedication behind the project.
Nebu’s innovative approach has not gone unnoticed. The store was awarded Bronze in the 2025 A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award, recognizing its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life improvements. As a serene enclave amid Hong Kong’s vibrancy, Nebu exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate everyday experiences, making each visit a celebration of the beauty found in fleeting moments.
