Curved Minimalism: Gin Residence by Wu Tai-En and Hsieh Tung

Beige tones and flowing forms redefine serene living in Taiwan

The Gin residence in New Taipei City, designed by Wu Tai-En and Hsieh Tung, exemplifies how minimalist interiors can achieve both warmth and sophistication through thoughtful use of curves, seamless materials, and natural light.

Inspired by the homeowner’s lifestyle, the Gin residence employs curved elements throughout its 115-square-meter space, eliminating sharp edges to foster a sense of softness and strength. The design’s commitment to a unified beige palette, seen in paint, cabinetry, and furnishings, minimizes visual clutter and creates a tranquil environment. Seamless micro cement flooring connects public and private zones, visually expanding the home and enhancing its open, airy feel.

Distinctive features set this project apart, including the use of mosaic tiles, textured wall finishes, and harmonized lighting to add depth and elegance. The layout is intentionally open, beginning with a curved entryway that guides visitors through the space. Dual oval ceiling features and carefully adjusted angles draw the eye toward expansive windows framing a panoramic 180-degree river view. A half-wall and glass partition in the master bedroom soften boundaries, allowing uninterrupted views and a fluid transition between communal and private areas.

Material selection and craftsmanship are central to the residence’s appeal. Micro cement is applied to floors, walls, and cabinetry, creating a cohesive visual language. Rounded corners and seamless edges on wardrobes and cabinets reinforce the home’s gentle, continuous flow. Every design detail, from the invisible induction cooktop in the kitchen to the sunken bathtub overlooking the river, is executed with precision, reflecting a dedication to both function and aesthetics.

Lighting plays a pivotal role in shaping the atmosphere. The residence adopts a no-main-light concept, using indirect lighting, linear fixtures, and spotlights to create varied moods—dramatic, bright, or softly illuminated. The walk-in closet, with glass doors and curated lighting, serves as a showcase for personal achievements, while curved walls provide visual separation and exclusivity. Locally sourced materials, such as kitchen and bathroom tiles, and textured walls inspired by the homeowner’s rural upbringing, infuse the space with regional character and nostalgia.

Challenges in the project included integrating local motifs and materials, reconfiguring the master bathroom’s layout, and achieving seamless transitions between spaces. The corridor, designed as a gallery, features a concealed door with handcrafted stone textures, enhanced by strategic lighting to evoke mystery. Decorative branches in the living area serve as living art, reinforcing the home’s role as a testament to beauty and craftsmanship.

The Gin residence, awarded Bronze in the 2025 A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award, stands as a refined example of how minimalist design, when executed with care and creativity, can elevate daily living and connect occupants to both nature and memory.
