Innovative mobile app fosters empathy and support for expectant couples

Recognizing this gap, Ziwei Song’s team developed Conexion, a mobile application that uniquely addresses the emotional and communicative needs of both partners. The app’s dual-interface system provides tailored experiences for mothers and fathers, ensuring both feel supported and understood throughout the pregnancy journey.

What sets Conexion apart is its integration of advanced technology with empathetic design. The application leverages biometric sensing via Apple Watch, using pressure and heart rate sensors to detect mood fluctuations. An AI-driven emotional analysis engine interprets this data, offering personalized recommendations and real-time mood sharing between partners. This approach not only encourages empathy but also provides actionable guidance for fathers, a group often underserved by traditional pregnancy apps.

Conexion’s user-centered design is evident in its intuitive operation. Upon registration, users select their role—mother or father—and receive customized notifications, insights, and reminders. Weekly pregnancy milestones, expert advice, and appointment alerts keep both partners informed and engaged. The app’s cloud-based architecture ensures seamless synchronization across devices, while its visual design, crafted in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite, prioritizes clarity and accessibility.

Underlying Conexion’s development was extensive research involving qualitative interviews and surveys with expectant couples. The findings highlighted the importance of emotional support for both partners and challenged the convention of apps focusing solely on women. This research-driven approach informed the app’s features, such as real-time emotional sharing and gamified engagement elements, which foster a supportive and enjoyable experience without compromising the app’s empathetic tone.

Conexion’s innovative approach has not gone unnoticed. In 2025, the project was awarded the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in Mobile Technologies, Applications, and Software Design. This accolade recognizes products that advance art, science, and technology, and Conexion stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful, inclusive design in shaping healthier, more connected relationships during pregnancy.
