Xiangcheng Paradise Walk: A New Era for Urban Shopping

Junwei Shen’s design blends Suzhou’s heritage with modern retail innovation.

Xiangcheng Paradise Walk, designed by Junwei Shen, reimagines the shopping mall as a vibrant, nature-inspired social hub, merging Suzhou’s classical garden elegance with contemporary urban life.

Located in Suzhou, a city celebrated for its water towns and classical gardens, Xiangcheng Paradise Walk stands as a testament to the harmonious integration of tradition and innovation. The design draws inspiration from the poetic imagery of “dancing waters in forested streams,” seamlessly blending the tranquil beauty of Suzhou’s historic landscapes with the dynamic energy of modern commerce. This approach creates a unique environment where the past, present, and future coexist, offering visitors a refreshing and immersive experience.

One of the most distinctive features of the project is Moon Island, a 3,000-square-meter urban oasis situated on the upper levels of the mall. As the first of its kind in Suzhou, Moon Island serves as a social and experiential centerpiece, redefining the conventional shopping experience. This innovative space highlights the project’s commitment to fostering community interaction and elevating the quality of urban life.

The material palette—comprising stone, wood grain, bronze, and white aluminum—was carefully selected to evoke a sense of quality and natural ambiance while meeting stringent fire protection standards. A glass atrium roof allows natural light to flood the interior, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors and enhancing the overall atmosphere. The thoughtful use of green plants further reinforces the connection to nature, making the mall a sanctuary within the city.

Spanning 145,000 square meters across six above-ground and two underground floors, the mall is organized into four themed zones: Water Runway, Moon Island, Water Lane Spaceship, and For Food. Each area offers a distinct experience, catering to diverse interests and encouraging exploration. This strategic layout not only boosts consumer engagement but also invigorates market activity, contributing to the high-quality development of regional commerce.

Junwei Shen’s design addresses the challenge of merging Suzhou’s rich cultural heritage with contemporary eco-fashion sensibilities. By prioritizing social interaction, experiential offerings, and environmental consciousness, Xiangcheng Paradise Walk sets a new benchmark for retail environments in China. The project’s success is underscored by its recognition with the prestigious Golden A’ Design Award in 2025, celebrating its outstanding contribution to art, design, and urban innovation.

Xiangcheng Paradise Walk exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform commercial spaces into lively urban destinations, enriching both the community and the cityscape. As a model for future developments, it demonstrates the enduring value of blending tradition with forward-thinking creativity.
