Moutai Prince: A Symbolic Fusion of Culture and Craft

Elegant packaging design celebrates Chinese heritage and modern artistry

Drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese symbolism, Chengdu Wanjiazu Technology Co., Ltd has reimagined the Moutai Prince bottle, blending cultural motifs with innovative craftsmanship to create a packaging design that resonates with both heritage and contemporary aesthetics.

The Moutai Prince packaging stands as a testament to the power of design in storytelling. Inspired by the Chinese saying about a sesame stalk blooming notch by notch, the bottle’s form mirrors the natural curves of a sesame pod, while the cap evokes a blooming flower. This thoughtful symbolism is further enriched by the inclusion of five cranes on the T-shaped cap, representing prosperity and artistic refinement. Such elements not only enhance the visual appeal but also imbue the product with layers of cultural meaning.

Distinctive features set this packaging apart in a competitive market. The redesign, commissioned by Kweichow Moutai Co., Ltd., focuses on color harmony, intricate patterns, and superior craftsmanship. The bottle base features a delicate velvet texture, offering a luxurious tactile experience, while the cap’s metal embossing creates a vivid 3D effect. These details elevate the sensory experience, making each interaction with the product memorable.

Technical excellence is evident in every aspect of the design. The 500ml bottle is crafted to balance visual impact with ergonomic comfort. The color palette, dominated by an elegant sauce hue and accented with bronze and gilded gold, creates depth and sophistication. A diagonal label set against a wisteria purple background, framed by golden wheat ear patterns, adds a touch of refinement and visual harmony.

Beyond aesthetics, the packaging serves as a bridge between the brand and its consumers. By integrating traditional cultural elements and meaningful symbols, the design fosters a sense of cultural confidence and emotional connection. The embossed illustration, Timeless Heritage, and the outer box adorned with Ruyi motifs and cloud patterns, collectively convey wishes for longevity, prosperity, and health, turning each bottle into a vessel of heartfelt blessings.

The project, initiated in Chengdu in March 2024 and launched in December 2024, reflects extensive research and a deep understanding of consumer desires. The design not only celebrates traditional aesthetics but also amplifies emotional value, sparking social interactions and enhancing user satisfaction. This commitment to excellence was recognized with the Golden A' Packaging Design Award in 2025, underscoring the design’s impact on art, science, and technology.
