Occupying 2,100 square meters in Oscar Niemeyer’s legendary Copan building, the Enjoei headquarters by Gema Arquitetura stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful requalification. The project, completed in July 2024, transforms a historic 1950s floor into a vibrant workspace for Brazil’s leading second-hand ecommerce platform. By embracing the building’s original finishes and prioritizing recycled materials, the design not only honors the architectural legacy but also advances sustainability in commercial interiors.
Central to the project’s vision is a deep engagement with the Copan’s history and Niemeyer’s original concept of an elevated, open garden. The design team, led by Nara Grossi and supported by Joseana Costa, Giuliana Mora, Bárbara Olyntho, and Ana Koga, drew inspiration from the building’s fluid forms and democratic ideals. The result is a workplace that fosters both physical and emotional connection, with internal “streets” guiding movement and interaction, echoing the rhythm of the city outside.
Unique features define the Enjoei headquarters. The design avoids unnecessary demolition by retaining existing subfloors and central pillars, reducing waste and preserving the building’s character. Custom carpets, curated furnishings, and restored finishes create a distinctive atmosphere, while meeting rooms employ cost-effective acoustic solutions in place of traditional glass partitions. The predominance of white throughout the space evokes a sense of lightness and futurism, aligning with the company’s forward-thinking ethos.
Functionality is seamlessly integrated into the design. The terrace, reimagined as an internal street, serves as the main entrance and social artery, connecting employees to natural light and city views. Approximately 230 workstations are arranged to encourage collaboration and well-being, with acoustic quality and accessibility at the forefront. The spatial layout supports a dynamic ecosystem, where the boundaries between work, relaxation, and urban engagement are intentionally blurred.
Extensive research underpinned every aspect of the project, from architectural theory to the practicalities of adaptive reuse. Gema Arquitetura’s approach demonstrates that revitalizing historic structures can be both respectful and innovative, offering a model for sustainable urban development. The project’s recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in 2025 underscores its technical excellence and artistic achievement, highlighting the potential for heritage buildings to inspire new ways of working and living.
Enjoei’s headquarters exemplifies how contemporary design can honor the past while embracing the future. By fostering a sense of belonging and community within an iconic setting, the project invites other organizations to rethink the possibilities of urban reoccupation and adaptive reuse.
