Stretch Color Vases Blur the Line Between Art and Object

Bo Zhang’s award-winning vases evoke both painting and sculpture through color and form.

Bo Zhang’s Stretch Color collection transforms the everyday vase into a mesmerizing interplay of color, transparency, and dimensionality, redefining homeware as both functional object and artistic statement.

In the world of contemporary design, the Stretch Color vase series by Bo Zhang stands out for its unique ability to shift between two-dimensional and three-dimensional perceptions. Inspired by the duality of planar art and sculptural form, these vases appear as paintings from one angle and as ethereal sculptures from another. This visual ambiguity is heightened by the use of gradient transparent acrylic plates, which blur the boundaries of the vase’s structure and create a mysterious, expressive presence in any space.

The collection comprises three vases of varying sizes, each demonstrating a distinct visual “stretch” of color. As the gradient transitions from deep hues to complete transparency, the vases seem to partially disappear, inviting viewers to question where form ends and emptiness begins. This effect is achieved through a careful combination of curved shapes and expertly sprayed color, resulting in a dynamic sense of movement and uncertainty that challenges conventional expectations of homeware.

Bo Zhang’s innovative use of acrylic and gradient spray techniques not only enhances the visual impact but also showcases the technical mastery behind the design. The dimensions—ranging from 36 to 27 centimeters in height—allow the vases to function as both standalone art pieces and practical decorative items. The interplay of color and transparency encourages interaction, as changing light and perspective continuously alter the vases’ appearance.

Research for the Stretch Color series focused on exploring how color strength and form could be manipulated in space to evoke a sense of visual tension and release. Overcoming the challenge of creating a “disappearing” effect, the designer succeeded in producing vases that embody both fantasy and uncertainty, pushing the boundaries of what homeware can represent. This innovative approach earned the collection a Silver A' Design Award in 2025, recognizing its technical excellence and artistic ingenuity.

Stretch Color by Bo Zhang exemplifies the convergence of art and function, offering a fresh perspective on decorative homeware. Through the thoughtful integration of color, material, and form, these vases invite viewers to experience everyday objects as works of art, enriching living spaces with a sense of wonder and sophistication.
