Huazolo Aphrodites: Embroidered Heritage Meets Contemporary Fashion

Celebrating Indigenous Craft and Sustainable Design in Oaxaca

Huazolo Aphrodites by Cynthia Gomez is a striking collection that fuses ancestral embroidery techniques from Santa María Huazolotitlán, Oaxaca, with modern fashion sensibilities, highlighting the importance of cultural preservation and sustainable design.

The Huazolo Aphrodites project stands as a testament to the power of collaboration between contemporary designers and indigenous artisans. Cynthia Gomez, in partnership with master embroiderers from Oaxaca, sought to preserve and revitalize traditional textile techniques while introducing them to a broader audience through innovative fashion. The collection draws inspiration from the community’s rich symbology—multicolored rhombuses representing days of the week and animal motifs reflecting local fauna—woven into garments that echo the town’s topography and street intersections.

What distinguishes this collection is its deep-rooted respect for heritage and its commitment to sustainability. The design process involved extensive immersion in the local culture, with designers and artisans exchanging knowledge and ideas. This approach ensured that each piece authentically represents the identity and traditions of Santa María Huazolotitlán, while also embracing contemporary aesthetics. The garments—ponchos, blouses, and dresses—are crafted using zero-waste patterns based on the traditional huipil, utilizing squares and rectangles to minimize fabric waste.

Technical innovation is at the heart of Huazolo Aphrodites. The use of local textiles and inputs not only supports the regional economy but also promotes environmental responsibility. The collaborative process enabled the integration of indigenous embroidery techniques with modern design, resulting in pieces that are both easy to wear and rich in cultural meaning. Each garment serves as a canvas, telling stories through embroidered symbols and patterns that connect the past with the present.

The project faced significant challenges, particularly in fostering empathy and communication across a distance of over 1,000 kilometers between Mexico City and Oaxaca. Multiple meetings and immersive research sessions were essential to understanding the artisans’ values and ensuring that the final designs resonated with their cultural identity. The pursuit of sustainable silhouettes and the use of local materials further underscored the project’s dedication to ethical fashion.

Huazolo Aphrodites has been recognized for its excellence, receiving the Silver A' Fashion, Apparel and Garment Design Award in 2025. This accolade highlights the collection’s outstanding technical and artistic achievements, as well as its role in introducing positive change and wonder to the fashion industry. By merging ancestral craftsmanship with contemporary design, the project not only preserves cultural heritage but also elevates it on a global stage.

Through the thoughtful integration of tradition and innovation, Huazolo Aphrodites exemplifies how fashion can serve as a bridge between cultures, generations, and sustainable futures. The collection invites appreciation for the artistry of indigenous communities and inspires a renewed commitment to ethical, meaningful design.
