Stack Up: Urban Privacy Meets Resort-Inspired Living

Kazuma Kobayashi crafts a tranquil, light-filled home in Kurashiki City

Stack Up by Kazuma Kobayashi reimagines urban living with a house that balances privacy, openness, and comfort, drawing inspiration from resort hotels and innovative architectural forms.

Located in the heart of Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, Stack Up stands as a testament to thoughtful residential design in densely built environments. The house, completed in 2023, was conceived to offer its inhabitants a sanctuary reminiscent of a resort hotel, despite its urban setting. The building’s distinctive silhouette, formed by overlapping box-like volumes, creates a sense of depth and visual interest while cleverly addressing the need for privacy.

Central to the design is the integration of a courtyard, which introduces an open, airy atmosphere to the home. Large glass panels and carefully positioned windows flood the interiors with natural light, while the strategic placement ensures that the living spaces remain shielded from the gaze of neighboring buildings. This approach not only maximizes daylight but also allows for natural ventilation, enhancing the overall comfort of the home.

The interior of Stack Up is characterized by high ceilings and a spacious layout, reducing any sense of confinement and fostering a welcoming environment. The use of natural materials, such as wood and stone, further connects the indoors with the outdoors, while the color palette and finishes were meticulously chosen to highlight the homeowner’s collection of miscellaneous goods. The garden, designed as a dog run, features secure fencing and ample space for pets, reflecting a commitment to both functionality and lifestyle integration.

Research played a pivotal role in the project’s development, with window placement and landscaping tailored to the site’s unique conditions. A large tree in the garden acts as a natural screen, balancing privacy with the desire for openness. The harmonious blend of interior and exterior spaces exemplifies Kazuma Kobayashi’s dedication to creating environments that are both practical and emotionally fulfilling.

Stack Up’s innovative approach to urban residential design has not gone unnoticed. The project was honored with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, recognizing its excellence in integrating industry best practices, technical proficiency, and user-centric solutions. As urban living continues to evolve, Stack Up offers a compelling model for achieving tranquility, privacy, and connection to nature within the city.
