Moon River: Wabi-Sabi Serenity in Modern Living

Yi Chun Chung’s tranquil home design celebrates light, shadow, and simplicity.

Inspired by the gentle flow of a moonlit river, Yi Chun Chung’s Moon River residence infuses wabi-sabi aesthetics into everyday life, creating a harmonious sanctuary where light and shadow dance throughout the day.

Moon River, a 100-square-meter residential project by Yi Chun Chung, stands as a testament to the beauty of simplicity and the power of thoughtful design. Drawing from the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi, which finds elegance in imperfection and transience, the home is meticulously crafted to evoke tranquility and natural warmth. The entrance features a round mirror reminiscent of a moon reflected on water, subtly expanding the space and setting a serene tone upon arrival.

The living area exemplifies the balance between open space and intricate detail. A perforated panel behind the sofa serves as both a flexible storage solution and an artistic display, allowing personal collections and décor to become part of the home’s visual narrative. This feature not only enhances functionality but also elevates the aesthetic, as changing daylight transforms the appearance of the displayed items.

Floor-to-ceiling windows are central to the design, inviting sunlight to traverse the interior and create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. In the morning, soft rays illuminate the beige laminate flooring, while at night, a distinctive chandelier casts a calming glow, fostering a peaceful ambiance. The use of natural materials such as rattan in the TV cabinet and subtle Italian paint finishes further enriches the tactile and visual experience, blending simplicity with a sense of comfort.

Technical elements, including iron accents, PanDOMO surfaces, and titanium plating, are seamlessly integrated to reinforce the home’s modern yet timeless character. These materials, chosen for their durability and understated elegance, support the overall vision of a space that feels both refined and inviting.

The project’s design journey was not without challenges. Achieving a seamless flow of light and shadow required careful consideration of window placement and spatial arrangement. The result is a home where boundaries dissolve, and every element—from the artistic entrance mirror to the panoramic windows—responds to the natural rhythm of the day.

Moon River’s innovative approach earned it the Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, recognized for its creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life. The residence exemplifies how artful design can transform daily living, offering a peaceful retreat that celebrates the quiet beauty of the ordinary.

Moon River invites reflection on how thoughtful architecture and design can elevate the everyday, encouraging a deeper appreciation for light, space, and the subtle poetry of home.
