Carbon Craft Eyewear: Reinventing Durability and Style

Classic design meets cutting-edge carbon technology for modern lifestyles

Carbon Craft, designed by Nguyen Vu Duc and the VOOC Design Team, reimagines classic eyewear by merging timeless aesthetics with state-of-the-art materials and production techniques. Inspired by the designer’s daily need for reliable glasses during work, sports, and family activities, this collection addresses the modern demand for both resilience and style. The project began in Ho Chi Minh City after a formative visit to Sabae, Japan, a region renowned for its eyewear craftsmanship.

What sets Carbon Craft apart is its screwless, hinge-free construction, eliminating the need for metal framing entirely. This innovation not only enhances the frame’s durability but also simplifies assembly and part replacement. The eyewear’s structure leverages the unique properties of carbon fiber mixed with nylon resin, resulting in a frame that is both lightweight—just 29 grams—and remarkably strong. The absence of traditional hinges and screws means fewer weak points, allowing the glasses to withstand everyday impacts and stresses.

The production process begins with digital modeling in Rhinoceros 3D software, followed by fabrication using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printing. Carbon fibers are blended with nylon in precise ratios to optimize strength and flexibility, while the hinge components are crafted from TPU, a resilient thermoplastic. Manual grinding and polishing techniques ensure a refined finish, blending high-tech innovation with artisanal attention to detail.

Functionality is central to Carbon Craft’s design. The eyewear features pre-installed replacement joints, enabling users to easily swap out parts without specialized tools. By simply sliding the temples out of the frame and replacing the TPU joint, maintenance becomes accessible and straightforward. This user-friendly approach is a direct response to the challenges of traditional eyewear, which often requires professional repair for even minor issues.

Environmental considerations are also at the core of this project. By reducing the variety of materials, minimizing machinery, and optimizing production for minimal waste, Carbon Craft lowers CO2 emissions and water pollution. The design’s resilience means fewer replacements over time, further reducing its environmental footprint. As a result, Carbon Craft not only meets but exceeds industry standards for sustainability and practicality.
