Omar Khayyam, renowned for his philosophical quatrains, has inspired generations with reflections on fate, existence, and the fleeting nature of time. Vahid Mirzaei’s poster series commemorates Khayyam’s legacy by introducing his poetry into the rhythm of urban life. The project, realized in Tehran’s metro stations and city streets, invites passersby to pause and engage with the poet’s timeless words, fostering a unique dialogue between history and the present day.
The design stands out for its seamless integration of Persian calligraphy and modern graphic principles. Each poster features custom-crafted typography, with Khayyam’s verses in Persian elegantly paired with English translations. This bilingual approach ensures accessibility for a diverse audience, while the visual harmony between traditional script and contemporary layout captures attention in bustling public environments.
Technically, the posters are produced using digital rendering techniques, with dimensions of 150 cm by 107 cm, printed in CMYK at 300 dpi for vivid color and clarity. The design process involved meticulous research into Persian typographic traditions and modern readability standards, resulting in a product that honors both cultural heritage and practical function.
Interaction with the posters unfolds in three stages: initial intrigue sparked by the intricate typography, comprehension through the English translation, and personal reflection as viewers internalize Khayyam’s philosophical insights. This layered engagement transforms everyday commutes into opportunities for contemplation, making art and literature an accessible part of daily urban experience.
The project’s success is underscored by its recognition at the 2025 A' Graphics, Illustration and Visual Communication Design Award, where it received the Silver distinction for its innovative approach and artistic excellence. Vahid Mirzaei’s work exemplifies how thoughtful design can bridge eras, cultures, and disciplines, enriching public life through the power of art and poetry.
By bringing Omar Khayyam’s wisdom into the heart of the city, this poster series not only celebrates a literary icon but also redefines the role of public art in contemporary society.
