Modular Living: Redefining Space with Studio One’s “A Moment”

Flexible interiors blend light, texture, and adaptability in Taipei home

Inspired by the concept of modular systems, Studio One’s “A Moment” reimagines the boundaries of residential interiors. Each area is conceived as an independent cube or zone, allowing for seamless reconfiguration based on the resident’s lifestyle and spatial needs. Sliding doors serve as dynamic partitions, enabling the creation of private zones within an open-plan environment. This approach results in a living space where boundaries are intentionally blurred, yet can be easily redefined, showcasing a harmony between form, function, and flexibility.

The open floor plan is central to the project’s uniqueness. By maximizing spatial depth and encouraging a continuous flow throughout the main living areas, Studio One ensures that natural light permeates the entire 80-square-meter apartment. The interplay between daylight and interior materials—such as textured wood panels and mineral paint—creates a dynamic visual and tactile experience that evolves throughout the day. This design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also promotes energy efficiency by reducing reliance on artificial lighting during daytime hours.

Technical innovation is evident in the strategic placement of storage systems beneath existing beams, which serve both as functional dividers and as solutions to structural challenges. The design conceals storage and functional elements within new walls, allowing for adaptable space boundaries that shift according to the resident’s needs. The result is a home that feels expansive and uncluttered, despite its compact footprint.

Research and careful analysis of the client’s lifestyle informed the reduction and resizing of rooms, transforming a previously segmented layout into a bright, circulating space. Solid walls provide clear demarcation when needed, while sliding doors introduce flexibility, allowing for both privacy and openness. The monochrome color palette, paired with the thoughtful selection of materials, fosters a serene atmosphere and highlights the nuanced dialogue between light and surface texture.

Completed in Taipei in December 2023, “A Moment” exemplifies how thoughtful design can overcome spatial limitations. The project’s recognition with a Bronze A’ Design Award in 2025 underscores its contribution to quality of life improvements and its embodiment of best practices in art, science, and technology. Studio One’s approach demonstrates that, even within limited square footage, innovative design can deliver both functional versatility and aesthetic refinement.
