Drawing inspiration from the family’s love of hiking, Erin Guo infuses the renovated interior with subtle references to the outdoors. Rounded ceiling corners echo winding mountain trails, while metal strips on the dining room walls evoke sunlight filtering through peaks. These artistic touches not only enhance the visual appeal but also foster a calming, natural atmosphere within the home.
The renovation focuses on transforming a once dim and confined first floor into an open-concept common area. By seamlessly connecting the foyer, living room, and dining space, the design encourages social interaction and shared experiences. Accessibility is prioritized through features such as metal grab bars integrated into the shoe bench and carefully planned lighting that supports the mother’s eye health.
A commitment to sustainability and well-being is evident throughout the project. Only non-toxic, eco-friendly materials—such as certified zero-VOC paints, responsibly sourced lumber, and calcium silicate boards—are used. The inclusion of a ceiling-concealed air conditioning unit and an energy recovery ventilation (ERV) system ensures optimal air quality and energy efficiency, while a discreet circular maintenance hatch at the entrance maintains both function and aesthetics.
Technological innovation meets user-centric design in the home’s adaptable lighting system. The brightness and color temperature of the light strips can be easily adjusted, and the dining table fixture doubles as a reading light, catering to diverse needs and activities. These features, combined with improved window transparency and a layout planned from scratch after addressing structural challenges, demonstrate a holistic approach to comfort and longevity.
Erin Guo’s “Within The Sunlit Haven” stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful renovation. Awarded the Iron A’ Design Award in 2025, the project exemplifies how artful design, sustainability, and accessibility can converge to create spaces that nurture both body and spirit. This transformation offers a blueprint for revitalizing aging homes into vibrant, inclusive sanctuaries for modern family life.
