Hidden Boxes stands as a bold response to the persistent monotony found in many contemporary residential structures. Drawing inspiration from architectural milestones such as Raumplan, Domino, and Universal Plan, Yahya Kashi sought to deconstruct traditional spatial arrangements. The project’s core concept involves assembling independent spatial boxes, resulting in a cohesive yet dynamic whole. This approach carefully balances internal elements like the Mass/Void relationship and surface interactions with external considerations such as climate, privacy, and cultural context.
Located in a rapidly evolving neighborhood of Hamedan, Hidden Boxes occupies a unique position between low-rise villas and high-density apartment buildings. The design engages in a dialogue with its surroundings, acting as a hybrid typology that responds to both the historical character of single-family homes and the contemporary trend toward vertical living. This innovative approach not only addresses the area’s urban transition but also reimagines how residents interact with their environment.
The realization of Hidden Boxes relied on advanced construction techniques. A prestressed structural system with columns was chosen to support cantilevered slabs, enhancing both the building’s stability and spatial flexibility. The facade, crafted from Fakhr o Madin bricks anchored with bolts, creates a transparent yet solid boundary. This design ensures privacy, controls natural light, and responds to the local climate, while also referencing the region’s architectural heritage.
Research played a pivotal role in shaping the project. The design team analyzed both global architectural theories and the vernacular houses of Hamedan. This dual-layered investigation allowed for a reinterpretation of traditional spatial organization within a modern framework. Challenges such as sunlight control, privacy, and the integration of historical references were addressed through thoughtful design solutions, resulting in a residence that is both innovative and contextually sensitive.
Recognized with the Iron A’ Design Award in 2025, Hidden Boxes exemplifies how architectural innovation can emerge from a deep understanding of both history and present-day needs. The project not only redefines residential space in Hamedan but also sets a precedent for future developments that seek to harmonize tradition, technology, and lifestyle.
