Minimalist Web Redesign Elevates Hocking Hills Experience

The new Hockinghills.com stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful web design in enhancing lifestyle experiences. Driven by a desire to simplify the user journey, Cansu Dagbagli Ferreira’s approach eliminates visual clutter, allowing the park’s landscapes and offerings to shine. The platform’s minimalist aesthetic, characterized by clean lines and a muted color palette, creates a calming digital environment that mirrors the serenity of nature itself.

Central to the redesign is a comprehensive brand refresh and a robust UX/UI overhaul. Over 100 custom icons were developed, each crafted to improve navigation while maintaining a cohesive visual language. This attention to detail ensures that users can effortlessly explore accommodations and activities, making trip planning both accessible and enjoyable. The structured layout and refined typography further support intuitive navigation, catering to both desktop and mobile users through responsive design.

The design process leveraged the Diverge and Converge methodology, enabling the team to explore a wide range of ideas before refining them into a unified vision. Digital tools such as Adobe Creative Suite and Figma facilitated the creation of scalable, vector-based assets, ensuring consistency across all touchpoints. Real user data from the previous website informed every decision, resulting in targeted UX improvements that address genuine user needs and pain points.

Maintaining consistency amidst evolving project requirements posed a significant challenge, particularly given the extensive design system developed for the platform. However, the outcome is a cohesive and engaging digital experience that remains deeply connected to the local community and the natural environment. The website’s functionality extends beyond aesthetics, offering a seamless interface for researching and booking stays and activities in Hocking Hills State Park.

This innovative redesign has earned the Bronze A' Design Award in Interface, Interaction, and User Experience Design for 2025. Recognized for its creative ingenuity and technical excellence, the project exemplifies best practices in art, science, and technology, ultimately contributing to improved quality of life and a deeper appreciation for nature-driven travel.
