Shake Off: Redefining the Dog Washing Experience

Traditional dog washing stations frequently overlook the emotional well-being of pets, leading to anxiety and discomfort during bath time. Shake Off addresses this gap by employing a zoo anthropological approach, focusing on the psychological, emotional, and physical needs of dogs. The design encourages active participation from the animal, making washing a moment of connection rather than obligation.

Constructed from r-PETG—a recycled polyester reinforced with 30% fiberglass—Shake Off is both lightweight and durable. This material choice not only ensures strength and UV resistance but also highlights the designers’ commitment to sustainability. The use of LFAM 3D printing technology, which builds the station layer by layer with a robotic arm, allows for on-site production, reducing transportation needs and environmental impact.

Functionality and ergonomics are at the heart of Shake Off’s design. The station features independent access steps for small to medium-sized dogs, encouraging autonomy and reducing stress. Adjustable glass sidewalls allow for visual interaction between dog and handler, fostering trust and curiosity. The washing process is further enhanced by a thermostatic mixer for optimal water temperature and paw-activated water jets, turning bath time into a playful activity.

Maintenance is simplified through thoughtful engineering, including filtered drains to prevent hair accumulation and an integrated drying system. A front drawer provides convenient storage for towels, ensuring the entire washing and drying process is seamless and efficient.

Shake Off’s development was informed by extensive field research, including interviews with veterinary behaviorists, dog trainers, and handlers. This research-driven approach resulted in a product that balances functionality with aesthetics, meeting both professional and emotional needs. The design’s excellence was recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2025, celebrating its innovative contribution to pet care.
