Plastic Heart stands as a striking example of how art and technology can converge to address urgent ecological issues. Conceived by designer SuKang You, this public LED media installation draws inspiration from the pervasive threat of plastic waste to ecosystems worldwide. By constructing a heart from colorful plastic debris, the artwork delivers a powerful visual metaphor—one that blurs the lines between humanity, wildlife, and the planet itself. The installation’s ironic beauty, reminiscent of festive ornaments, invites viewers to reflect on the consequences of daily plastic consumption and the collective responsibility for sustainability.
What sets Plastic Heart apart is its innovative use of generative AI and Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) technology. The heart, rendered in vibrant 3D, pulses rhythmically like a living organ, creating an immersive spectacle on a grand scale. The LED display, measuring 4224mm by 1944mm at Seoul’s COEX Mall, amplifies the installation’s impact, ensuring that the environmental message reaches a diverse public audience. The artwork’s adaptability across 14 different screen formats further demonstrates its commitment to accessibility and widespread engagement.
The creative process behind Plastic Heart involved a blend of advanced digital tools and meticulous post-production. Generative AI was employed to craft intricate 3D visualizations, while NeRF technology enabled the creation of multi-angle objects with heightened spatial realism. These digital assets were refined using compositing and motion graphics software, resulting in a seamless, high-resolution video designed for large-scale public display. The final piece captivates viewers with its dazzling visuals, set initially to festive music, before revealing a sobering environmental message.
Plastic Heart’s exhibition at the Seoul Media Art Festival 2025 marked a significant moment in public art and environmental advocacy. The installation not only raises awareness about the dangers of plastic pollution but also encourages viewers to reconsider their relationship with disposable materials. By transforming discarded plastics into a symbol of life and vulnerability, the artwork fosters a sense of urgency and hope, inspiring both individuals and industries to pursue more sustainable practices.
The project’s success is underscored by its recognition at the A' Virtual and Digital Art Installations Design Award, where it received a Bronze accolade for its creative ingenuity and technical excellence. Plastic Heart exemplifies how digital art can serve as a catalyst for social change, merging aesthetic innovation with a compelling call to action for a greener future.
As public spaces increasingly become platforms for dialogue and reflection, installations like Plastic Heart demonstrate the transformative potential of art in shaping environmental consciousness. SuKang You’s work invites audiences to look beyond the surface, urging a deeper consideration of the impact of everyday choices on the health of the planet.
