Kherson Park stands as a unique civic landscape in Kent, Washington, celebrating the city’s pivotal role in lunar exploration. The park’s redevelopment draws inspiration from the lunar rovers engineered by Boeing in the late 1960s, creating a space-themed memorial that bridges past achievements with future aspirations. By integrating interactive exhibits and educational programming, the park aims to ignite curiosity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) among visitors of all ages.
Distinctive features set Kherson Park apart from conventional green spaces. The design incorporates a replica of the lunar landing operation, astronaut sculptures, and a mission control panel, all complemented by augmented reality experiences. These elements allow guests to engage with space history in an accessible, hands-on manner. At night, smart lighting and special programming transform the park into a vibrant hub for community gatherings, further weaving the narrative of space exploration into daily life.
Sustainability is at the core of the park’s design. Over 93% of the 0.44-acre site is dedicated to landscaping and permeable paving, minimizing environmental impact and supporting local ecology. Durable, eco-friendly materials ensure longevity, while energy-efficient lighting reduces the park’s carbon footprint. The integration of technology, such as augmented reality, enhances educational value without compromising the park’s environmental goals.
Kherson Park’s realization involved extensive historical research and community collaboration. The design team consulted aerospace historians, local engineers, educators, and residents to ensure authenticity and relevance. Public workshops shaped the park’s playability and educational features, resulting in a space that resonates with both families and visitors seeking meaningful, interactive experiences.
Challenges in balancing historical accuracy, safety, and budget were addressed through partnerships with Boeing and local experts. Technical hurdles in augmented reality integration were overcome to deliver a seamless, engaging user experience. The park’s success is reflected in its recognition with the Bronze A' Design Award, highlighting its contribution to quality of life and innovation in landscape design.
Kherson Park now serves as a cultural landmark in Kent, fostering community interaction, STEM education, and environmental stewardship. Its thoughtful blend of history, technology, and sustainability offers a model for future public spaces, inspiring the next generation to reach for the stars.
