Pure Semicircles stands as a testament to the evolving needs of educational environments. Located in Ibaraki, Osaka, this preparatory and cram school was conceived to address the dual demands of academic focus and emotional well-being for teenagers. Tetsuya Matsumoto’s vision was to create a space that not only supports learning but also appeals to the sensibilities of its primary users—students navigating the complexities of contemporary society.
The design’s most striking feature is its semicircular entrance, where a rippled stainless steel ceiling and a mirrored median wall combine to form a complete circle. This interplay of reflection and form introduces a sense of expansiveness, making the relatively narrow space feel open and dynamic. The use of greenery and wood blinds softens the minimalist white palette, infusing warmth and a sense of calm that counterbalances the school’s functional rigor.
Material selection and spatial organization were central to the project’s success. Drywall techniques and wall cloth finishes provide a clean backdrop, while the ceiling’s rippled stainless steel sheets add a tactile, light-catching element. Linear lighting embedded within the ceiling and around its perimeter ensures even illumination, supporting both study and relaxation. Downlights in the study rooms further enhance focus, creating zones tailored for different activities.
The layout is thoughtfully arranged to facilitate interaction and privacy. Upon entering, students and visitors encounter the semicircular reception, which leads to consultation booths and administrative offices. The central study space features a communal table and a window-side counter, encouraging both collaboration and individual work. An arched opening connects to a secondary study room, maximizing the use of natural light and city views while maintaining a sense of enclosure.
Research for Pure Semicircles focused on balancing visual appeal with functionality. The challenge lay in making a school environment fashionable and inviting for teenagers, within the constraints of a narrow footprint and limited budget. The solution emerged through the creative use of materials—mirrored surfaces, stainless steel, and natural elements—resulting in a space that is both pure and cozy, minimalist yet rich in sensory experience.
Recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, Pure Semicircles exemplifies how thoughtful design can elevate educational spaces. By merging art, architecture, and innovation, the project not only enhances the quality of student life but also sets a new standard for contemporary school interiors.
