Nihonbashi, a district steeped in history since the Edo period, has long served as a financial and commercial hub in Tokyo. The Jp Base Ningyocho office, designed by Good Place, honors this legacy by merging traditional Japanese townscape elements with the elegance of Parisian apartments. This innovative approach introduces the concept of the "Apartment Office," where a cozy lounge and open-plan spaces foster creativity, collaboration, and a sense of belonging for entrepreneurs and startups.
What sets Jp Base Ningyocho apart is its focus on adaptive reuse in a country where rebuilding is often favored over renovation. The project leverages "real estate crowdfunding," pioneered by LEVECHY Corporation, to enable flexible investments and deliver fully furnished office spaces. Spanning five stories and 402 square meters, the building’s transformation emphasizes sustainability and value enhancement, while addressing the challenges of illegal modifications commonly found in older structures.
The design realization combines classic and contemporary elements. A herringbone floor pattern adds warmth and depth reminiscent of European interiors, while glass pendant lights introduce a modern touch to the traditional neighborhood. Glass walls enhance transparency and openness, complemented by black lattice windows and antique-style brass fixtures that provide a welcoming ambiance. These thoughtful details create a harmonious blend of old and new, reflecting the district’s unique character.
Functionality is central to the design. The lounge opens directly to the street, inviting the city into the workspace. Flexible zones—ranging from counters with shrine views to relaxed sofa areas—allow users to choose their preferred work setting. The conference room’s slit glass facilitates visual connection between spaces, encouraging spontaneous interaction and creative thinking. This layout responds to the evolving needs of startups, particularly those collaborating with larger companies and seeking adaptable, affordable work environments.
The project’s research and design process drew inspiration from Nihonbashi’s eclectic streetscape, where tradition and innovation coexist. By integrating Parisian elements into a Japanese context, the office appeals to forward-thinking companies looking for a distinctive, inspiring environment. The revitalization of this 30-year-old building not only preserves its structural integrity but also contributes to the neighborhood’s ongoing evolution as a center of creativity and enterprise.
Jp Base Ningyocho’s innovative approach has earned it the Iron A' Design Award in Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design for 2025, recognizing its excellence in blending industry best practices with cultural sensitivity. The project stands as a testament to the potential of thoughtful design to create workplaces that are both functional and emotionally fulfilling, setting a new standard for office interiors in Japan and beyond.
