Base: Weaving Tradition into Modern Visual Identity

Chinese knotting inspires a contemporary brand for religious goods

Base, designed by Lance Francisco, reimagines Chinese religious goods through a sophisticated visual identity that bridges heritage and modernity, earning recognition at the A' Design Awards.

Base’s visual identity draws deeply from the ancient art of Chinese knotting, a craft symbolizing unity and good fortune in both Buddhism and Taoism. This inspiration reflects a broader mission: to preserve cultural heritage while adapting to the sensibilities of contemporary design. By reinterpreting traditional motifs with a modern lens, the identity system ensures that the brand remains relevant across generations, fostering a sense of continuity and belonging.

The logo stands out for its subtle incorporation of the letter “b” within a woven structure, echoing the interconnectedness found in Chinese knotting. This design choice not only symbolizes continuity and legacy but also creates a visual narrative that resonates with both tradition and innovation. The repetitive patterns used throughout the branding reflect the cyclical nature of belief, where beginnings and endings are seamlessly intertwined. A carefully curated palette of black, red, and gold balances elegance with tradition, establishing a distinctive and meaningful presence in the market.

Realization of the identity involved a blend of digital design and in-depth cultural research. Vector-based software ensured precision and scalability, while traditional motifs were meticulously studied and adapted. The woven-style graphic system mirrors the cyclical rhythms of Chinese culture, and the color palette was calibrated for consistency across digital and physical applications, from packaging to environmental branding.

Technical specifications highlight the system’s versatility. The scalable logo, custom patterns, and optimized typography ensure legibility and impact across formats. Packaging materials were selected for both durability and environmental responsibility, reflecting a commitment to sustainability. The identity system’s seamless integration across touchpoints—from websites to packaging—creates a cohesive brand experience that appeals to both older practitioners and younger consumers seeking a refined connection to their heritage.

Research for Base combined cultural studies, consumer insights, and material exploration. Interviews with religious practitioners and analysis of historical artifacts revealed a market gap for modern, refined religious goods. The main challenge lay in balancing cultural authenticity with contemporary aesthetics—a feat achieved through deep research and thoughtful design. This innovative approach has not only modernized traditional products but also made them more accessible and visually appealing for a new generation.

Base’s efforts have been recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in 2025, underscoring the project’s creative ingenuity and contribution to quality of life. By weaving together tradition and innovation, Base sets a new standard for cultural branding in the modern era.
