Drawing inspiration from Act II, Scene I of Shakespeare’s classic, Joyce Li explores Titania’s duality—her commanding presence and nurturing heart—by channeling the rebellious spirit of 1920s flappers. The design pays homage to a pivotal era in women’s liberation, when wearing trousers was a bold statement of independence. Li’s creation features palazzo pants that mimic a skirt at rest but reveal their structure in motion, symbolizing the hidden strength and multifaceted identity of modern women.
The uniqueness of “See Our Moonlight Revels” lies in its reinterpretation of Titania for a contemporary audience. By blending romantic femininity with assertive design elements, the garment challenges the notion that strength and gentleness are mutually exclusive. The ensemble’s ability to shift appearance with movement echoes Titania’s emotional complexity and the transformative power of fashion as a form of self-expression.
Crafted in Vancouver, the two-piece set comprises a blouse and palazzo pants made from iridescent silk chiffon layered over polyester satin. Stripes of ruffles, individually cut and hand-embellished with seed beads, adorn the pants. As the wearer moves, the panels flutter open, evoking the image of a lovesick fairy queen surrounded by twinkling fairies. The lightness of the silk chiffon enhances the ethereal quality, while the hand-sewn beads catch the stage lights, adding dimension and visual intrigue.
Research for the design involved a meticulous study of both Shakespearean text and authentic 1920s fashion. Li referenced vintage Vogue illustrations, historical photographs, and digital archives to ensure historical accuracy while infusing personal creativity. The result is a costume that not only honors the spirit of the flapper but also captures Titania’s whimsical and elegant essence through details like flutter sleeves and flowing fabrics.
“See Our Moonlight Revels” was recognized with the Iron A’ Design Award in 2025, a testament to its innovative blend of practicality, technical excellence, and emotional resonance. The design stands as a reminder that assertiveness can enhance allure, and that love and gentleness remain powerful forces in redefining femininity for the modern age.
This garment invites audiences to imagine who Titania might be today—a woman who commands attention, embraces romance, and dances freely under the moonlight, her story as relevant now as it was centuries ago.
